So what is your two cents worth?

Are they worth as much as they were in Baltimore yesterday? A 1792 Birch cent went for $1 million, while a 1792 silver plug went for just under $500k. And then came the 1861 Seated Liberty Confederate half dollar which went for $646k. And you thought Confederate money was worthless.

For a sneak peek at the three coins:

When I was a kid, I dreamed of finding myself a "fido". I don't remember what the acronym stood for, but it went to the rare (modern) coin that was cast with some sort of flaw.
Freaks, irregulars, defectives, and oddities. Seldom hear anyone say that now.

I remember back in the 60's when we first shifted from silver to "sandwiches". I knew some people who'd literally filled a shoebox with silver change. At some point, the price of silver went to something like $30 per. I think it was that Hunt thing...or whatever. In any case, my friends made a tidy sum off that shoebox full of silver! For me to toss a quarter in a box just because it was silver?....no way, at that time - for me anyway - 25 cents was a lot of money!

Yes, it was the Hunt brothers, and they caused the price of silver to spike to close to $50 oz. They did the same thing people like J.P. Morgan did with the stock market before it crashed. In the stock market case, they paid reporters to laud stocks and convinced people to buy in. Once the price rose to where they wanted they sold their shares and people lost money. Silver is still a good investment, as long as people don't rely on it. I personally prefer certified high grade Morgans and Peace dollars, and of course Varieties. Amazing what an 1888-O hot lips can go for.
