High speed rail "not financially feasible?" But what about the joooobbbbssss???

Review urges delay in borrowing billions for bullet train
State-mandated panel concludes that the high-speed rail program 'is not financially feasible.' Gov. Jerry Brown's office signals that he isn't likely to be swayed by the findings.

I'll tell ya what, those trains are awesome and worth doing in some hookup cities like San Francisco to LA. It is probably the smoothest form of transportation. I think they pay for themselves in a bigger picture.

you done stole my thunder. I was just about to post the same thing.

Love the lib response below. Even though a detailed, peer review analysis said the thing will never pay for itself, the obivious lib still thinks it's an awesome deal.

I agree, but....everything in the American Lifestyle seems to be "ANTI-train," despite the fact that so many have a high respect for the nostalgia of trains.

We certainly do not have anything that could be considered a REAL Rail Infrastructure.

But still, it would seem that a High Speed Rail, between certain large cities, (LA to San Fran, for example...) would make all kinds of sense.

Although, it would probably make even MORE sense to link up Boston, New York, Providence, Washington, etc., where at least the rail system has SOME existing infrastructure.....

Trains, for some reason, have gotten a bad rap.

This is sheer, unadulterated stupidity.

Your own panel tells you it's too expensive and you ignore them? What an idiot.

Yes, to an anti-capitalist, the notion that it will never produce a profit is part of its appeal...

That's EXACTLY the route they found "not financially feasible." Not enough riders, not enough difference between rail and air fares.

Don't be political as that has nothing to do with it. The right connection lines would pay for themselves. Profit is going to depend on what cities are being considered for hookup. .San Francisco to Oakland would be profitable but at the expense of Amtrac. IF Jerry Brown gets a workaround that makes it the future of Amtrac, there is no reason for it not to profit in some cities. Particularly if the trains were owned and operated by private, for-profit with government subsidized. Everything depends on the cities being considered for hookup.

These bullet trains are the future of transportation for Amtrac like entities. Just is.

They may be better off starting with Oakland as that tunnel runs underwater and that is daily commuters. SF to LA is going to take a lot more time and expense but they may be able to get it going by reaching for San Jose first before moving on to LA. Let the thing grow.

Oakland may be too close for their speed so maybe Sacramento or San Jose as mentioned. Interesting prospect.

Yes, "politics" has nothing to do with it (rolls eyes):

The project has won major support from organized labor, some big-city mayors and many state lawmakers.

America is too old....too far behind the times to build a high speed rail system...Too many right wing naysayers that would rather give the money to the defense dept.....Now is the time for China-Japan-Asia along with Europe to build these projects....They will lead the way into the 21st century for rail travel

Agree. I'll tell ya one ride on a Bullet Train and all negative thoughts about train travel go out the door. It is an amazingly comfortable and fast way to travel. It would be nice if any state linked known commute cities together as they seem to fare better in the profit area.

You DO realize that "rail travel" is a 19th century mode of transportation, don't you?

Point to one anywhere in the world (except Japan) where commuter rail pays for itself.

19th century???...Europeans trains will soon go 250 mph....Trains in China maybe 300 mph...There is nothing 19th century about that.....

They're a money pit. A great way to finish off California for good.

Good luck.

Seems to ME the things you mentioned above would be the exact types of things examined by that State-mandated panel prior to them coming to the conclusion that the high-speed rail program "is not financially feasible".....................

Perhaps you too should try to view this while leaving your politics out of it, whatta ya think?

And of course, one of the reasons it works in Japan is the high concentration of people in a small area. The proposed routes in California- the exact opposite. I'll gladly guarantee they're a massive loss if built. Jerry Brown is a moron.
