Only about 1/3,maybe a little less,of the battlefield is preserved in the state park. The rest is privately owned,mostly by Georgia Pacific Railroad Company. Some of it is swamp now formed when the Mississippi River changed course in the 1870's. There is a neat little museum there and a 6 mile walking trail. The walking trail covers some of the best preserved original earthworks of any Civil War battlefield. It is a tough march. I walked the entire trail. There are 3 original cannons on the grounds too.

Going back this weekend for a re-enactment:

3/25/2017 to 3/26/2017 • Port Hudson State Historic Site, Jackson - Siege of Port Hudson Reenactment, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m, each day. Visitors will have access to volunteer re-enactors in Union and Confederate campsites performing typical activities of the assaults. Soldiers dressed in authentic reproduction uniforms will be on hand to answer questions pertaining to the siege during the summer of 1863. The three branches of the services – artillery, cavalry and infantry will be portrayed as well as cooks, laundresses and sutlers. That's a pretty good drive. It's a little over 4 hours to Port Hudson from where I live.

Getting excited about this event. Leaving early Thursday to see some other sites. Little rain in the forecast Saturday so I'm not sure how that will effect the event. Saving a museum or 2 to be on standby for Saturday just in case. Sunday weather forecast looks good. Got a back issue of Blue & Gray Magazine about Port Hudson yesterday. Boning up for the trip

Every time I visit a site I keep wishing that Jeb Stuart would have charged up the road flanking the Union troops thus allowing Pickets Charge to have been the decisive charge ending the war with a Glorious Southern Victory.

Then we coulda freed the Slaves and burned the Northern Territories to the ground and then given all the North to the freed Slaves to do with it as they willed.

Everyone would have been winners.

Don't think that would've won the war. New Orleans,Nashville and Memphis were already in Union hands. Vicksburg surrendered on July 4,1863. Port Hudson surrendered on July 9,1863. The Confederacy was split in half.

Got busy yesterday and forgot to drop a post here. The Port Hudson CSA forces surrendered 154 years ago yesterday. It had to have been miserable duty for soldiers on both sides.

The 155th anniversary of the surrender at Port Hudson. I went to the 2nd Annual Baton Rouge Civil War Round Table Symposium in April. Stayed 2 nights at a hotel near Port Hudson. Can't resist going to the National Cemetery when I am there.



The Park crew was gonna fire the 42-Pounder naval gun but had a misfire:
