Is this forum dying?

I agree...it seems nobody cares about any of it anymore. It's gotten so bad that it's no wonder we can't get new people in here.

Seems to be hardly maintained anymore...

Good luck!
Maybe the owner is satisfied with the low numbers and the boring personal fighting and the non-existent real discussions. In some ways, it's believable that PJ was doomed the minute Slate people came here. Old battles are more important to some than actual political discussion and frankly, that's just boring now. And it does not attract new posters.

Many of us have tried to help, but the trolls here just screw that up the minute a good post goes out. There's no reason to try anymore since maintenance of the board has just about ceased.

What do you mean by "maintained"? Staff consists of the Owner/Administrator and 3 volunteer Moderators. Do you think PJ needs a bigger staff or bigger administrative footprint? Do you think Phil, connie and I should be replaced with new Moderators? You could start a private conversation with all staff and give us your ideas about how Staff can make PJ better.

Speaking for myself only, it all seems so dominated & overwhelmed by anti-Trump vs pro-Trump debates/attacks that it's not so enticing as it used to be. There are some who try to break out of that but it doesn't seem to take much.

Ultimately, any forum's success is up to its users. It's up to us to do more and do better,

New blood would be nice. Maybe adding a leisure activities section could help -- books, movies, music, etc in their own space. Of course, adding a sex & sexuality section would probably do the most to attract new folks.
Maybe those in charge will consider these.

If you recall in 2016 we slowly implemented new name calling rules and posting rules which came to a head around the election and all of you rejected those new rules so we got rid of all of them and just let the mods each moderate in their own styles.

It is what you all wanted. As for traffic it is about the same and as for the posts all anti trump vs trump that's what the 2% on the far left and 2% on the far right that are here think. You all think its an us vs them when most sane people are in the middle and root for the country. It is what it is. The side that loses the election always goes crazy and many of those left. Also its impossible to get new posters because you all rip them apart like a pack of wolves.

But as you know my personal work is April 1 to Oct 1 so I am never around that much during those months.

I guess I didn't realize you got rid of all the rules and left it up to the mods....this answers what I've been wondering, how nothing happens to reports of name calling or personal attacks being ignored most of the time....it depends on who's moderating.

In my opinion...the new posters that get ripped are the ones that come here instantly attacking one side or the other. When I came here in 2012, as soon as it was known I was a conservative, I got ripped and attacked constantly. So that's been going on for years.

I agree on new posters.

As for the mods ignoring. Remember we are still getting over 600 posts a day. So if it isn't reported then assume no mod read it. I know I haven't read it. If you don't have time to report why would we have time to read it?

From the tone of your reply, it seems you took my post as being critical of the administrators or moderators; I didn't mean it that way at all.
As I said, it's really up to we users to make or break this forum.

You're surely correct that it's the far left & far right that see everything in terms of us vs them, but that's not what I was saying. Sorry I didn't express myself clearly enough. We all "root for the country" in our own way. I only meant that Trump-centered debates seem to me to have squeezed out a lot of other things and so there's less here for those who want something else or something more.

We're rooting for the forum, too.

We should all make it a point to welcome any new posters kindly. That's up to all of us, too.

"It is what it is" but it doesn't have to stay that way.

Please, edify us with the uplifting content..
Why Phil, I don't think we are close enough to be "edifying" together. Plus, I think there may be ancient state laws on the books that outlaw that kind of stuff.

Guys,

Don't take it personal as I'm not picking on your moderation. I just noticed when I peek in that there's a sort of staleness. SW, spend some time and money to refresh the overall format, open some new avenues/sub-forum topic areas for discussion, learn how to promote the site.

Create a flame zone for those addicted to fighting and hope it/they wear out. Consider to run a near zero-tolerance zone for a specific area or two focused on more serious main topic driven discussions and no matter who complains about it being tight, screw em. Hell, Phil and BD already (probably) know exactly what I mean, it's not rocket science. They've been on forums that have run a zoned platform like that before. You have much better forum tools now than we did then in the old forums, it's not hard.

You have a good core group even with the old pissing matches which can be mitigated/moved into a different zone. Take the forum, step back, look at it with new neutral eyes...(I did) and think a bit, then cultivate and grow it.

I'm not big on private convo's with mods. I'm more of a "community" sharer since everyone currently here is a contributor whether politically left/right or whatever. Besides, not everything I think is right (save that statement!) and one of the other members may have a better idea or improvement of what I might suggest.

It really is up to posters to make the forum better. Many of us try to do that with edgy Top Posting that will draw response. When the response is limited to personal attacks or empty criticism of the source of the post or something else that dead-ends discussion, it takes discussion into a circular nothing-fest.

Posters generally don't think of posting to help the board be one that draws new posters. They post directly to the poster - in some form of attack. Moderation is only present to make sure the board is presentable to the public. Ever-present trolls can be controlled, but can't be eliminated even by the best moderation.

In all forums, new posters have to go through some sort of trial to finally be accepted. It's not easy breaking into a forum. Back on Slate, one of the moderators once said that we would be surprised at how few posters there actually were. Maybe that's true. Maybe over time, that certain few posters are all there are and all there will ever be and those certain few just keep rotating through the boards reinventing themselves.

I wonder.

I have all the time in the world to report, and I have. I just know of posts that were reported by several people, and the posts remain untouched. No big deal...I just didn't know that rules had changed to eliminate the new rules you had. It all depends on who the mod is at that time.....

There you go. We have a poster here admitting that they reported as a gang. How else would you know that others were reporting said post, unless you were all PMing your plan to get someone banned? And I know for a fact that you and your bunch were checking to see if we were banned after you all reported us. That's partly what's wrong with this place. GANGING UP. How old are you all? 12?
