Trump criticized immigration from 's---hole' countries: report



President Trump reportedly referred to immigrants from Haiti and African countries as coming from “shithole countries” on Thursday.

Trump made the comment in an Oval Office meeting with lawmakers during a discussion of protections for immigrants from several countries, according to The Washington Post.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to multiple people briefed on the meeting.

He reportedly suggested that the U.S. should bring in more immigrants from countries like Norway.

Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) were present at the meeting, and were surprised by the comments, according to the Post.

Trump has been quoted criticizing immigrants from these countries in the past. The New York Times reported in December that he once suggested that Haitian immigrants “all have AIDS,” and that Nigerian immigrants would never “go back to their huts” if granted entrance to the U.S.

The White House denied those allegations, but did not comment to the Washington Post on Trump’s Thursday remark.

In the meeting, lawmakers reportedly floated reinstating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for countries that have been removed from the program as part of an immigration deal.

Earlier this month, the Trump administration announced that it would end TPS for more than 260,000 immigrants from El Salvador.

Trump campaigned on a hardline immigration stance, and has tried to enforce limits through his travel ban, which has been challenged multiple times in courts.

I think all immigrants should go through a very tough vetting process. Entire life history documented, medical history, medical exams, mental health exams. I have no desire, again, to import anyone else's problems. We already have a shit-ton of nutters, losers and ne'er do wells here already.

I was born here. I have enjoyed all the benefits of being a citizen of this country and having fairly well off parents, at least compared to a lot of my peers. I find it childish to use that language that Trump did to describe other countries. Yes, they are desperately poor. Are there poor places in the US? Are they shitholes? Would it be ok for Trump to call Detroit a shithole? How about Miami?
