Welcome to Trump's Command Economy

https://gizmodo.com/after-bragging-about-broadcom-jobs-trump-kills-its-qua-1823716096

Trump just blocked a merger between Broadcom and Qualcomm on national security concerns. Those concerns being Broadcom has a reputation for a cost-cutter. Trump blocks the merger because he thinks Broadcom will cut their R&D in 5G.
There is a real possibility to that 5G turns out to be useless, overpriced technology, and the R&D turns out to be a complete waste of time and money. Instead of Broadcomm laying off the R&D division at Qualcomm, the entire workforce at Qualcomm is endanger of losing their job because Trump's government is now charge of deciding which risk it takes. We have no idea if 5G will succeed or how much it will cost, that's why its a risk that private sector should be making on its own. Now that Trump has got involved, it is only fair to bailout Qualcomm should they fail.

More mergers and acquisitions need to be blocked. Even better, as many as possible that have been allowed in recent years should be undone. 'twould be a major employment boost and a boon for consumers.

Companies wasting money on things they don't need to is the opposite of a boon for consumers.

True, but I don't see how that conflicts with what I said. More competition is a boon for consumers. "Cost savings" and "efficiencies" -- i.e. firing people -- isn't an overall benefit to the economy, only to executives and, maybe, to shareholders in the short-term.

Efficiencies free up capital to do other more productive things with it. That's how economies advance. The industrial revolution was because partially caused by increased efficiencies in agriculture which freed up human capital to work in the factories. Which led to higher standard of living. The same thing is happening now.

Okay. So where is all the "freed up human capital" -- that is, unemployed people -- going to go to work and be productive now?

this isn't 1950

unemployment isn't 10%+ as during Obama
it's like 4% and when that low those that will work have jobs
there's not the number of factories now and there is a need for
farm employees (but it's so hard and too dirty for many Americans)

China is no where to be in the story. Broadcom is a Singaporean company. And we have no idea if 5g is the future of the internet or not.

That's like saying Americans of European descent are European. Do you consider yourself European because your ancestors were born there?

Do you ask Blacks that have never been to Africa why they claim to be African-Americans?

Broadcom is a Chinese Firm............

You're just Trolling now

Broadcom is a Singaporean company. The Trump administration is worried that Broadcom will slash R&D and China will beat the US to market with 5G.
Since when does the the government know what the future of the internet is going to look like. The free market determines these things, There is a strong possibility the R&D Qualcomm is currently doing on 5G internet is going nowhere, there is a strong possibility the technology is too expensive, and free market competition can come up with something better. But Trump is a communist dictator, who doesn't believe in the free market. This is why Venezuela economy is in the shitter, Their government got too heavy-handed choosing winners and losers, now Trump's is emulating them.
