Nothing.

I understand what you're saying, Connie.. luckily, though, we each have our own fears, phobias, likes and dislikes.I did know that but I haven't tried it. I still don't think I would be comfortable in what is actually someone else's home, though. Some of them are full time rentals. And I would possibly consider renting one of those because its not unlike any other vacation rental necessarily. However, I personally like to deal with agencies that are licensed and insured - and so I have some measure of recourse should the property not be up to my satisfaction.
We generally travel and come in late the night "before" our real vacation is supposed to start so the last thing I want to do is roll up to a place that isn't up to snuff and not have a front desk that can just move me to another unit in the building.
I call it the Adam Walsh effect. For kids who grew up in the 80's or 90's when "stranger danger" was at its height, there was nothing drilled into our heads more than - don't talk to a stranger, don't take a ride from a stranger.... poor kid went missing - and they only found his head or his body and not his head. Either way, by 8 or 9 I was completely convinced that interactions with a stranger meant certain violent death. And, I can not reconcile the lessons of my entire childhood with this new "sharing economy". I used Uber the very first time this summer - but I was with a bunch of girlfriends and we were in a tourist area - and it felt safer that way. When you spend your entire youth being told to never take a ride from a stranger, you certainly can't even imagine spending the entire night in a stranger's home. I never hooked up and went home with people from bars either. And when friends tried to do the same, I would remind them of Adam Walsh and then of course later - of Ted Bundy.... Yeah.. he seemed real nice too......
Now that I think on it, its actually been years since there was a super high profile serial killer out there, taking random kids, or pretty young women right off the street. Perhaps that has lulled us into a certain complacency.
I don't trust hotels to be clean either. I just mitigate that by bringing my own stuff including my own cleaning supplies. And if a person is renting out their house, it may not be clean either. For instance hotel linens ( when they are washed) must be washed at a certain temp. The vast majority of home machines don't even get near to the temp to sanitize and actually kill germs. So you may be sleeping on sheets that only 30 people have slept on, but they may have never actually been washed in hot water. So they may "look" clean.I understand what you're saying, Connie.. luckily, though, we each have our own fears, phobias, likes and dislikes.
I'm more troubled by the idea of germs and possibly dirty linens from hundreds, if not thousands, of strangers than I am of being murdered in my sleep...
Works both ways, too, when you think about it. The people who invite us into their homes are trusting souls, too... WE could murder THEM just as easily, lol. Also, we could trash their homes, rob them blind, and otherwise harm them.
It all comes down to trust. I don't trust hotels to be clean, you don't trust people with your life. It's all good (or bad, LOL)...
When you think about it, the camper concept is best for both of us... LOL. PS... Airbnb OR hotel, I ALWAYS bring my own pillows... sanitizer cloths.... and definitely slippers, because I NEVER walk barefoot anywhere but home...I don't trust hotels to be clean either. I am cool with the concept of AirBNB and all. But, its just not my cup of tea. Nor is having roommates in general though. I don't like other people in my space. It would actually piss me off to have someone not family cooking dinner in my house with my stuff. Even when its family it pisses me off - if it isn't my immediate family.
I miss ours. We would just book campgrounds near places we otherwise wanted to visit. Not only did we have all our own stuff - our own beds, our own linens our own clean bathroom but the kids had lots of outdoors times when we weren't sight seeing or whatever else we were there to do. We would take it down to my brother's beach house and stay in the camper in their driveway so that the kids could play together but we would have privacy. We would do the same thing with friends in Jersey that we would visit. I keep trying to talk my husband into another but he has soured on it a little bit because despite all his loving care, keeping it covered, properly tilted, waxing and coating the roof, it still got a small roof leak. When you think about it, the camper concept is best for both of us... My youngest child has one in her driveway that was used A LOT when her kids were younger... we went with them several times, and I really enjoyed it! Nowadays, with the kids older and busy with baseball, horse shows, other school activities with friends, it pretty much just sits in the driveway... shame. She might as well sell it... especially with the boy going off to college in the fall. I can't see them getting much use out of it any more. Too bad...I miss ours. We probably sold ours prematurely but we had intended to upgrade. so, we sold ours - to get the downpayment on the new one. But, we had another opportunity come up and instead of sinking 100K in a new truck and 5th wheel, we bought another property. It was a better financial move but still I miss the camping. We had two families we would go with a lot and it was a lot of fun. One of them moved this past fall.. I keep telling DH we just need to get a small hybrid. We don't go for anything longer than 2 or 3 nights anyway, and it would be fun to just be able to go for a quick weekend here or there and let the kids take a friend or two. But withour friends gone, he is less motivated to do it for just us. We would probably only use it 4 or 5 times a year.My youngest child has one in her driveway that was used A LOT when her kids were younger... we went with them several times, and I really enjoyed it! Even the 40 cats don't make her happy.Indeed. Continually bitter and angry about life in general. Typical liberal woman.
A smaller one with fold-out 'rooms' like my daughter's had is probably better. Easier to tow, easier to park, and still plenty of room... hers sleeps 6 easily, has all the comforts of home, but you can tow it with a Ford Explorer or something like that, and just a trailer hitch. They also just usually used it over a weekend or at most 4 or 5 days, it was definitely a lot of fun.
