Finally seeing the effects of trump!

It's about time. We are finally seeing the effects of trump, mind you this is just a small piece of a much larger puzzle. The price of pallets. Our price, for our cheap pallets, is going up by $3.23 a pallet, you know trumps tariffs. We go through roughly 1400 pallets a week. Over the year that equates to a $235,000 increase in cost, that cost has to go some where and guess where end cost is. We were looking at hiring a couple more guys, but that is off the radar now. That's just our pallets, the amount of stainless steel we go through during a year is astronomical, I'd be real interested in how much that is going to cost once our $300 million expansion gets approved, I'm going to guess it will be around the 4 to 5 hundred million figure.

Actually demand for raw materials is up, as well as demand for pallets due to increased commerce

I have a company that deals in reclaimed steel, I'm up 400k over what I made this time last year. Business is picking up and I have given out bonuses and raises to the employees. While raw material is up, business is up more.

Which our supplier, who supply's to us and one other company, has nothing to do with demand or market value. We've been priced below market value, it's all family run and our company is linked to theirs through family friends etc. That price is strictly the increase of tariffs on wood from canada.

Hint........buy a nail gun and American lumber..........build your own pallets.....

Why in hell do you need Canada wood?

US labor costs to much. To keep the prices of everyday goods down, so US citizens can afford them, its necessary to purchase foreign lumber. Which also maximizes profit, the end goal in any business and ours is a co-op so it's even more important. The alternative is strictly corporate farms, and the small farmer is gone.

So with Phil's article above, about rising home costs, and what I've pointed out theres quite a conundrum. Few can afford a home, let alone the simple amenities our economy is based off of. While wages are to high because the cost of labor to make goods is high. So essentially no one can afford anything, eventually. So why not make it better by creating higher prices on goods and needs that no one can afford right?

Adapt & Overcome........if pallets are high, if correct you up North, don't locals cut timber for lumber? Market is loaded with plastic pallets, where's you problem? Small farmers may be gone in your state, it's not in mine, except we must farm more acres to make same profits.

If few can afford homes, why is new home construction up? How many shitty cars do you see daily? If folks can't afford anything, why in hell are majority riding around in NEW automobiles, with new campers/ATV's/Golf Carts in toll on way to vacation.............

You libs are so depressed and whiny.........amazes me why all of you don't commit suicide.............geeeeeeeeeeezus

Food Stampers don't give a damn of price of goods (food)..........ya Obama made History with most ever on food stamps..........hopefully, Trumps reduces that BIG time.........

Wow you are a year and a half late. What's a matter with you? Did not want to pay a decent days wage for pallet. I bet you hire illegals so you don't have to pay them a reasonable wage. You were hoarding 235,000 and not sharing the wealth. The increased cost means more tax revenue...just like Obama wanted so you should be happy, because you did not want Trump to cut taxes and now he is not cutting taxes because yours went up...it's a win for you.

Besides where are you buying your pallets? Morroco?

Trump jacked up tariffs on lumber from Canada, and the price of lumber in the US is skyrocketing. The home builders are freaking out.

Trump’s insanity is having the predicted negative consequences.

For those of you involved in the consumption of industrial lumber, 2013 was a year to remember!

The year started with a very mild winter and fairly stable supplies. Inventories of lumber were not outstanding, but neither was demand. Things were pretty much in balance.

In the softwood markets, pricing increased and decreased dramatically throughout 2013 as foreign buyers entered and exited the markets. In the hardwood markets, pressure from a variety of markets kept inventories low and prices on the rise.

We saw this under Obama. 2013 was the same if not worse.

They are not freaking out because the tax cuts offset the cost.

Sure we could pay another $3 on top of yesterdays $3 raise in prices for the pallets to buy US lumber, but that doesn't make much sense does it. As I stated in the OP, it's just the tip of the iceberg. We just put on a $90 million dollar expansion.

We are going to put on another expansion that would have costed $280-$300 million last year. What will that cost us now? At even a 20% increase that's a hell of a lot of money. I'd like to see what the cost of our cardboard is going to be as well, from $70,000.

And no, we hire no illegals. Everyone employed is DHS certified, they have to be per the regulations put in place after 9/11. We have lost 9 farms, between 350 head to 800 head of cattle each, since March. Looks like that trend will continue.

Demand obviously always plays a role in prices. But as my linked piece notes, Trump’s tariffs on Canadian lumber have caused prices to skyrocket.
Yes. And demand, and there's a glut, and mortgage rates are up so people renting more, etc...

Again, other factors affect pricing too. But again, Trump’s tariffs on Canadian lumber have caused prices to skyrocket, and home builders are freaking out.

And that’s the point.
