Paige Patterson, a seminary president from North Carolina who was elected today as the Southern Baptists' president, said the amendment was a response to ''a time of growing crisis in the family.''

    R. Albert Mohler Jr. president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., said the amendment was based on a Southern Baptist belief in the literal interpretation of Scripture. The submission of wives to their husbands, Mr. Mohler said, is ''not a modern idea'' but ''is clearly revealed in Scripture.''

Speaking of the amendment, he said ''the secular world may hear it as strange, but it is, we believe, God's pattern.''

Because the Southern Baptist Convention is a creedless organization, no Baptist is required to agree with the Faith and Message statement or the current amendment. But the statement is nonetheless important on two grounds. It stands as a central theological proclamation for the denomination, and Southern Baptist employees, seminary professors and often ministers are expected to agree with it.

One who criticized the amendment was Robert Parham, executive director of the independent Baptist Center for Ethics in Nashville, Tenn.

''They hope to make June Cleaver the biblical model for motherhood, despite numerous biblical references to women who worked outside the home,'' said Mr. Parham, who did not attend the convention.

Recent Baptist conventions have passed resolutions that express a sense of the denomination on social issues like opposition to abortion, but have said relatively little about the family.

The Faith and Message statement is a broad theological statement mainly dealing with God and church and until now has included little in the way of social stands. Until today, the message statement had been amended only once, in 1963, when a section on higher education was added.

Amending the statement represents a triumph for the denomination's conservative leadership, which came to power in 1979 and has gradually shifted Southern Baptist agencies and seminaries to the right. Theological moderates have remained within the denomination, but many have started their own seminaries and other institutions, and they have also largely quit coming to the annual conventions.

Today's vote helps reinforce the image of Southern Baptists as staking out some of the most conservative positions among evangelical Protestants, a growing group who account for about a quarter of the American population, according to recent polls. A year ago, Southern Baptists called for a boycott of the Company, saying that the entertainment giant condoned homosexuality. In 1996, the annual convention voted to appoint a missionary specifically to evangelize Jews, a move that provoked outrage among Jewish groups.

Like many anti-Christians, you take something out of context and then attempt to twist it to fit your own sick narrative.

Submit - in relation to the overall teachings and perspective for most Christians does not mean BDSM style submission and control that you lefties generally get aroused at considering or get off on bashing. They leave the perverts with whips and Doms to lefty AG's.

Furthermore, there is actually NOTHING wrong with people wanting to make June Cleaver the standard for motherhood. There is nothing wrong with women - teaching other women about the joy they can find, in motherhood, in being a wife, and focusing with the kind of intensity they focus on their careers, and putting that energy into those things.

That may not be what floats everyone's boats, but neither is being a career woman. I have several good friends who are stay at home moms' and have been for almost 20 years now and will likely never go back to work because as they are finishing raising their youngest kids, their oldest kids will be having babies, and they want to be involved in that, and or their own parents have aged and need additional help. Choosing to submit yourself to the good of the family and let your husband be the official executive of the family is not necessarily a negative. They are happy, their kids are happy, and they have nice fulfilling lives. Indeed the most unhappy women I personally know are those who juggle a career ( don't mean a mere job, I mean an actual career).

Besides, as the saying from My Big Fat Greek Wedding, goes, the father may be the head of the family, but the mother is the neck, and she can turn that head anyway she wants to. Any woman married to a decent man who loves her, has long figured out how to get her way.. most often by convincing him that it was his idea to do what she wanted.

I don't want complete submission, I just want a good meal, an occasional backrub, and the remote..... that's not unreasonable, IMO.
Lol. A simple man... love it.

I thought submit was submitting to watching whatever stupid shit he want to on TV - that isn't the submission we are talking about? I am actually pretty tolerant. I watched men fishing off alaska, fat dudes driving trucks over ice, homesteaders, all manner of mechanics and grease monkeys and how its made shows. I have drawn the line at watching people suck dirt off the bottom of the ocean floor looking for gold though.

My husband works 60+ hours a week, drives the kids all over the county for activities, fixes all our cars, does all our yard work, does laundry with me, helps clean up after dinner ( will occasionally cook if the menu is hotdogs, burgers or brats) and pretty much anything else that needs done. If the price of all that is letting the poor guy watch what he wants on the TV the little bit of time he actually sits down to watch it, so be it.

Well said, Connie. My wife and I opted for traditional roles very early in our marriage, and it was the best decision we ever made. She has thanked me many, many, many times for the opportunity she had to stay home to raise and school our daughters, and keep our home. And I've thanked her many, many, many times for the opportunity I had to provide for our family while she focused on being the best wife and mother.

Now that our girls are older, my wife has gone back to her career and the dynamic is different. But we are eternally grateful for the years we spent as a traditional family, and we're all better off for it.

Not only Liberals misread that scripture. A lot of ignorant Baptists and other ignorant Christians also misread it.

I think that is great. I think if I had met my husband when I was younger, I think we would have had more traditional roles. As it stood, I was almost 28, he was 35. We had lived on our own a LONG time. I had already been divorced. And I was not ready or able to trust him to provide. And then to top it off right about when our youngest was born was when the economy tanked, and he took a massive paycut for several years, etc. and we really needed my job to see us through.

Now as my 11 year old is going off to boyscout camp for a week missing some of a family trip and is starting to get his own life, you do realize how really freaking short that time is overall and I am sorry I didn't make some other choices, that is for sure.

Contrary to what all Liberals either actually believe, or say they believe, and what a small number of ignorant, phony Christian men think, Ephesians 5: 22-33 does not mean, keep your wife barefoot and pregnant, and smack her around every time she gets out of line.
Scripture puts the man as the spiritual leader of the household, and the wife, just as Christ is the head of the church. The woman is to submit and allow her husband the opportunity to fulfill that role. This scriptural relationship places far more responsibility on the man than it does on the woman.
Acting as the spiritual head of the household, and the woman, he must act as Christ acts toward the church, with love and compassion.
Christ does not get drunk and beat his kids. He doesn't slap his church around if dinner is a few minutes late. Christ doesn't f**k off at work and get fired so that he can't support his family. Christ puts his church first, protects it, loves it and does everything in life with the best interests of his church at heart. His church always comes first. He would die to protect and save his church, in fact he did.
That is what scripture requires of a man when it says a woman should submit to her husband.

Yeah well, I have to walk her dog for her, because she doesn't seem to understand that dogs need exercise and attention or they go nuts. Why is this a sacrifice on my part, you ask? Because it's a Pomeranian....

You got any idea how [Unwelcome language removed] silly I feel walking this little furry retard every day?:cool:

We were extremely blessed; married young and it stuck, I have a well-paying career so we could actually make it on one salary, we are healthy, etc. I very much appreciate it all and understand so many people don't have the same options. And yes, the time is so, so short. My little girls are growing up; one starting college in August and the other is halfway through high school!

We have a couple of Irish Wolfhounds and every so often I let one of them take me for a walk. The male, standing on his hind feet with his front paws on my shoulders (I have to have my back to a wall to stay upright) is a head, or more, taller than I am. It is all I can do to hold him back, when walking him, and am sure that, if I ever trip and fall, I will probably be dragged until someone either shoots the dog, or me.

I love dogs, but I do have a rule against having one that out-weighs me. :)

Irish Wolfhounds are sweeties though.

They are very lovable dogs. They're like Baby Huey, though. They'll run up to you to get petted and knock you off the chair. My daughter and soninlaw are going to breed them. The two we have are still puppies but they are as big as a great Dane.

Its a shame they have such short life spans, too. Such is the way with big dogs, but its sad.

Our Golden will be 13 in a few months. That is getting old for that kind of dog. We are lucky to still have her and she is still plenty active and spry. I hope we have her for long while. She has been such an unbelievable family pet.
