Who knew that a guy too dumb to comb his hair would be a racist

Newly translated into English, Albert Einstein's private travel diaries from the 1920s reveal that he was racist in his early life, especially towards Chinese people.

The journals, published as "The Travel Diaries of Albert Einstein" by Princeton University Press, reveal that Einstein, perhaps the most famous scientist of all time and known for his theory of general relativity and the equation e=mc2, was extraordinarily biased towards certain populations. This is a stark contrast to his stance later in life when he said that racism was a "disease of white people."

The diaries were written between October 1922 and March 1923. In one entry Einstein wrote that the “Chinese don’t sit on benches while eating but squat like Europeans do when they relieve themselves out in the leafy woods. All this occurs quietly and demurely. Even the children are spiritless and look obtuse.”

Eh... he was a man of his time. That is just how things were. It seems harsh and racist now, because we have been drinking the PC swill for so long. But there is nothing inherently racist about looking at other cultures, particularly at a time when he was doing so when they were comparatively under-developed and thinking that they were somehow strange or inferior.

So what Hitler did was ok because it was a different time and that as you say is just how it was? Was keeping negroes as slave property OK because that it how it was at the time?

Hitler's was at a time when it was not acceptable. Yes slavery was just how it was at the time. when you know betteryou do better. But it's ridiculous to judge historical people by today's standards.

Weren't there people during slavery who knew and said that it was wrong?

Sure some did. But the peacticein this country was hundreds of years entrenched by that point. Culture does not change or did not change overnight. You have to put things in the perspective of the time. The vast majority of people never traveled more than 30 miles from where they were born. Most people were illiterate. There was not broad access to public libraries. The only significant social putting was Sunday church. Most newspapers were forbidden from printing anti slavery messages in the south and if you did expect to get run out. It was merely the life they knew. It was how they were brought up and for the vast majority of people it was all they were ever exposed to. Moreover the vast majority of people did not own slaves themselves. So it was not even a situation where many would have had personal experience.

If you are born into a house where you are told that the sky is green in a community which believes the sky is green. And you never leave that community, the only media you are exposed to informs you the sky is green, the ministers at your church tell you the sky is green. You will believe the sky is green. They aren't dumb or stupid or evil bevause they thought the sky was green. For many they had little opportunity to learn anything else.

Culture and law may not change as quickly as needed, however what is right and wrong, moral and immoral is not decided on, these things just are, like the sun and moon.

No, what is right and wrong, is a function of what society sees as right and wrong. There are still societies that exist right now which believe that is right to keep slaves. Moral and immoral - the same... merely a function of society.

How will society 150 years from now judge your interpretation of right and wrong today?

Doesn’t that make you just dead wrong?

Lol so if society says that slavery is permissible then it is also right.

On what planet is this true?

Um.. This one, its called earth. Plenty of societies since the dawn of man have had slaves. Clearly it was not considered any sort of universal wrong.

Has right and wrong changed since Jesus challenged the one without sin to throw the first stone? Will any of this change ever

You are not getting the point, by your rational, when slavery was legal, it was also right, meaning morally correct. Is this your point?

It was certainly morally correct for some people yes. Morality is not absolutes. It is based on culture and societal norms.

Slavery was never morally correct, not at any point in time. Do you really believe that keeping people in chains and whipping them was ever morally correct? What about burning mothers and children alive?

If you answer yes you need some grape koolaid

You don't seem to understand that YOUR morals is not some sort of objective morality .

I do not believe it was every morally correct. But what I believe being raised with modern day christian values, is not what everyone else believed nor what people raised outside of that belief system, believe.
The Natives thought it was perfectly appropriate to take slaves from the warring tribes they killed. That was common throughout not only much of the Americas but also Africa. Egypt thought it was perfectly appropriate to keep slaves, Greece, Rome.. all believed slavery was completely appropriate and moral - and some of the biggest advancement in science and astronomy and mathematics came from those periods.
