Florence the freight train hurricane

By the way, pray for Dawg, he's got a farm about a hundred miles inland from the North Carolina coast and he was just starting his harvest, this satellite pic of water vapor was from this morning...

... they forecast that heavy rain to keep falling through Sunday... I doubt he will have an internet connection for a long time to come and you have to wonder how he is going to finish his harvest? He's going to be standing in 2-3 feet of water.

So the eye is still a good ways offshore. Great thread btw.

If it hadn't slowed down, it would already be crossing over Dawg's farm by now. It is real close to the coast, by hurricane standards, outer bands are pelting Tennessee. Let's see if I can get the latest pic where this beast is at.

Okay, whoa, winds dropped to 90 mph, so it is category 1 now and it is moving at 6 mph, so it sped up one mph... this could end up being a non-event, it was supposed to come to a stall, if it speeds up, it might not go anywhere near the forecasted track. this hurricane refuses to listen to anything NOAA has to say about it...

I hope Dawg is safe.

He was posting just a little while ago so he has power.
He's been getting a lot of rain, but no hurricane winds; if this storm keeps dying, he should escape any wind damage. If it speeds up, he will survive the rain, but if it lingers for days ... that's the worry.

He has generators - and beer.
Okay, Florence is not going to follow the coast, there's going to be no storm surge "event", and the rain is going to be heavy but in inches, not feet.

Becuzzzzzzzz... she made landfall, her eye is over land. She made landfall as a category one hurricane, this storm isn't going to hurt anyone all that much, we might not lose any life.

latest position is right on the beach...

I'm not sure if she didn't follow the coast in the wee hours of the morning or if she turned west and headed straight for the coast, either way, she was category one.

Much further north than the aiming point was on Tuesday.
She turned southwest, but this was nothing like they forecast. Folks living on the beach got hit, but even they mostly rode it out. (There was about 350 evacuees from New Bern)

And the hurricane is over... once that eye gets on land, the giant pump ends, now it is just one great big pain-in-the-ass thunderstorm.

Phew

But I do not trust the 'NEWS' anymore - sensation is what they are after and damn the truth. In instances such as this people could, understandably, begin to become complacent but one day there really will be a big one - 'the boy who cried wolf'

You know, it is damn tough to predict the weather, and forecasting a hurricane path and speed... almost impossible. This hurricane came real close to following predictions, but it weakened way early and it never stalled, and it never walked down the coastline; but it slowed to 5 mph AND IT DID TURN SOUTHWEST, this hurricane came real close to becoming a huge menace, had that eye stayed offshore and had the hurricane slowed to 2-3 mph, like they predicted, this would have been a totally different ballgame.

I know how hard forecasting is - here we have it coming at us from so many different directions that it is near impossible (though one can usually be sure of rain) and with a hurricane it is only safe, for all in it's wake, to predict the worst possible out come but ........................

they are all different. And they are unpredictable. I remember category 4 Charley was forecast to go straight north alongside Florida's Gulf coast and plow into Pensacola. But half way up the Florida peninsula, Charley made a sharp right turn and buzz sawed the Florida peninsula in half. No one saw it coming, and Charley was moving so fast, he only took a day to come out category 2 in the Atlantic. Unbelievable wind damage, looked like a super wide tornado came through.

Everyone is afraid of the winds, but it is the flooding that kills. If a hurricane parks itself just off your coast, the flooding can get apocalyptic. That's what Florence was supposed to do. Had this hurricane remained a major hurricane (category 3 and higher) and really walked down the coast... it would have pushed a storm surge never before seen. But it didn't happen, thank God.

I think a lot of people would second that, Days, thank God xxx

This hurricane was such a close call, and Dawg should still get that 2-3 feet of rain before its over. How does your tractor run through that? He might have to wait for a couple days of sunshine to get back to the harvest.

Latest NOAA update says it is still a hurricane; barely. 80 mph sustained winds, and it has slowed to a crawl... 3 mph west-southwest direction. If this sucker turns further south in the next few hours, it could walk right back into the water. And that's how slow it is moving; casual walking speed.

this is still going to be a lot of flooding for North Carolina southern coast.

Can you imagine the urge had gone right up into Tampa bay?
