The 14th amendment wasn't even created for the American Indian it took the Indian citizen act of 1924 for them to have the rights of American citizens and they were born on American soil.
The point of “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” was to exclude the families of foreign diplomats, who are in fact not subject to the legal jurisdiction of the U.S.
