Quick question: What good does 'banning' posters do an a Fray, in reality?

In theory, it's supposed to be a 'punishment', I guess, to force posters to comply with 'The Rules'.

In praxis, however... what it does is chase posters away and allow a board to die a less than honorable death.

I've seen it more than once. I don't know what the answer is... censor? Don't censor? Rules? Free-for-all? Just include personal threats to other posters and/or their families in the 'bannable offenses'? Or let minor insults , real or imagined, rule the day (and the board)?

Just sayin'....

I'm putting this in the place where I know it will be read by most, instead of some obscure category that nobody ever reads. Do with it what you will.

Absolute free speech except IRL credible threats.

I have always said/ thought "Less is better".
Banning should be reserved for someone who stalks, threatens, harasses another poster in ways that go beyond simple name calling. When a poster represents a danger to other posters, that poster needs to be removed and maybe, not for just a few days.

Any rampant banning for silly things IS LEFTIST DRIVEN.

Leftists cannot tolerate anyone with opposing viewpoints and DEMAND that punishment be made on anyone that "offends" them in any way.

LEFTISTS are what causes bannings here on PJ these days. Their screams for "fairness" (while not seeing their own offenses) must fill the mod boxes.

We used to give temp points for violations and after x amount of temp points the person would be temp banned for a few days. You all voted that you didn't want that so we went to the current system of "timeouts". Been this way for a year now.

This thread will be deleted as it is against the rules. :)
