Changes in 2019

I have been trying to come up with a list of 5-6 changes/goals for 2019 like I did for 2018. I was pretty well able to accomplish those for 2018. I completely accomplished 5 out of the 6. Been kinda hard to focus and concentrate on the 2019 plans. The holidays have been kinda hectic and there were major changes in my business this year that were totally unanticipated at the beginning of this year. There will be major changes in 2019 too and I am feeling some economic anxiety right now.

I turned 60 last month and have been planning to retire at 62 for a coupla years. I still want to do that but I will need to make really smart financial decisions in the next 2 years and be even more frugal than I already am. Might have to work more these next 2 years than I did this year and in 2017 and 2016. That is part of the problem too. I just don't enjoy my work as much as I used to.

I am hoping that starting this thread will help me clear my mind some and focus better.

Good luck to you and your changes.
I love the new year because it's like a new chapter opening up for me to write ......... 365 blank pages.

My husband isn't 60 yet........and he is emotionally ready to retire. We are in the process of shoring up things for him to make that happen. It is hard work.

I wish you well.

I can so relate to that. It is kinda like before going on a vacation. The day or two before you leave everything is hectic and it seems impossible to get everything done.

When I look around this big house and know that I need to start boxing things up for a downsize.............it looks like a mountain and me standing there with a spoon in hand to take care of it.

I am ready for downsize. We have 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms that nobody goes into. We could invite a whole family to come live with us and we'd never see them.

One goal/change for 2019 that has jumped to the forefront as I've been pondering others is that I have to spend more time with my 81 year old mother and 82 year old father at the expense of whatever is necessary to make that happen. None of us are getting any younger. I hear and read all the time of people regretting not spending more time with loved ones before their passing. I don't want that to be me.

Treasure your family and friends. We have no guarantee what will happen tomorrow!

Another goal for 2019 is to eliminate my intake of carbonated soft drinks. I hesitated to put that in the top-post that started this thread because I wasn't sure how committed I was. It's gonna be hard but I started that on Saturday and I feel like I can do it. I totally eliminated energy drinks this past year. Ironically,Diet Pepsi is my favorite and it's #1 for a different reason in this thread started by Dawg:

I retired 2 years ago at 63. I was ready, although our finances really weren't then. But, I figure you never know what life has to hand you, and if we all waited until we thought we could afford it, we'd work until we die! Plus, I decided to stay home and take care of our granddaughter....MUCH more fun! I'm glad I did this because this past year I've been fighting ovarian cancer. Right now I'm thankfully in remission, but they do expect it will come back at some time. This showed me life can be changed in a blink of the eye. My husband retired this past May to be home to take care of me. Retiring is a huge decision...and once retired, you will feel lost for a while, I STILL do! After working you're entire life, I can see why some get part time jobs just to keep them active :)

You are wise to get rid of any "diet" drinks. Aspartame, the sweetener in them, is worse for you than sugar is. I have to check labels to make sure no NutraSweet or other fake sugar products are in anything I drink because they give me headaches, but for most people they are a silent killer.

My main "resolution" (or more like a "hope" ) remains to avoid negativity. That means walk away from it when I see it in others and not say negative things myself. My real life is clear of negativity except for the time I set aside for self-loathing (taken from the Grinch). But here on PJ not participating in negativity (toward other posters, not toward evil in general) is going to be the real challenge.

We look forward to the time when my husband can retire. He is ready now, but he's about to turn 58, so he still has a couple of years left.

I am so glad you are in remission. None of us will escape death, but it is good to walk toward it feeling as well as we possibly can, so my hope for you is that you feel well enough to enjoy your grandbaby. You know............studies show that grandmothers who care for their grandchildren live longer. Here's to a very long life to you, @Caroljo.

Spend as much time as you can with them, @bdtex.
My parents died in 2005 (mom at 87) and 2006 (dad at 90). I lived far from them for most of my adult life but had weekly phone calls with them and visited often after they stopped being able to travel.

Wishing you all the best. You described why I am pushing hard to be in position to retire at 62 and why I am already feeling some anxiety over it.

Got a jump Saturday on this year's goals. Still trying to add 2-3 more. One for sure is to add some resistance exercises to my physical fitness routine. I already go on long walks just about every night, weather permitting, but I need to add some stress reduction and strength increasing activity. Started that tonight. Other goals are probably gonna be financial in nature.

Breaking radio silence. Been on a 21 day fast from PJ posting and other online political activity. My timing couldn't have been better either.

In Florida right now with my mother visiting her brother and sister-in-law. The trip out here was a lot faster this time. Mom left her purse in the truck this time when we stopped. :D Spent most of the day in the Tallahassee area yesterday.

The trip to take my mother to visit her brother in Florida again was a success. My mom is 81 years old, uncle 64 and aunt 55. My aunt and uncle are both on disability, have no vehicle and their resources are otherwise limited. When me and Mom visit them we go places, but obviously the 3 of them can't go on battlefield trail hikes with me. My aunt is Civil War enthusiast too. This trip,we went on a driving tour covering the Battle of Natural Bridge Campaign near Tallahassee. We also went to an old cemetery out in the country, where my aunt has an ancestor buried. She hadn't been there since she was a teenager. At the time, she didn't know anything about her ancestor there. On the last day there,we visited my cousin/mom's niece/uncle's daughter and her family in Dothan, Alabama. I think my mom was ready to be home when we got back. :D

Water, coffee and milk is about all I drink. I think I have had some kind of juice maybe 3-4 times this year.
