Changes in 2019

MrMike

Bless you all
I'm with you on soft drinks. I gave them up some time ago. I drink *gasp* unsweetened tea or water. Milk sometimes but not that often. Although it's a ways away, I doubt I will ever really retire as I like what I do and can moderate it up/down time-wise and travel to fit my lifestyle.

I have been trying to come up with a list of 5-6 changes/goals for 2019 like I did for 2018. I was pretty well able to accomplish those for 2018. I completely accomplished 5 out of the 6. Been kinda hard to focus and concentrate on the 2019 plans. The holidays have been kinda hectic and there were major changes in my business this year that were totally unanticipated at the beginning of this year. There will be major changes in 2019 too and I am feeling some economic anxiety right now.

I turned 60 last month and have been planning to retire at 62 for a coupla years. I still want to do that but I will need to make really smart financial decisions in the next 2 years and be even more frugal than I already am. Might have to work more these next 2 years than I did this year and in 2017 and 2016. That is part of the problem too. I just don't enjoy my work as much as I used to.

I am hoping that starting this thread will help me clear my mind some and focus better.
I wish you the best. It's hard to fully retire unless you are just filthy rich, which I am not. But I expect those who are well-off are involved in businesses and other enterprises from which they may not want to walk away. The extra time is can be a burden, I expect, unless you have enough money to travel, etc.
I am semi-retired. I spend most of my time writing. I am a Master Electrician and I provide my license for a company that installs backup generators for residences and businesses. They pay me for the use of my license and that gives me an extra income stream. My books haven't made the NYT best sellers list yet but I make a little money from sales. When the company installs a generator, I have to be on the job to supervise, and I get paid for that. My wife and I both draw Social Security, and occasionally, I go do some electrical work for someone and make some extra cash.
When you retire, just make sure you have something to occupy your time and your mind. Otherwise the boredom may take a toll on you.

That might be possible for me by the time I turn 62. We'll see. There would have to be a major restructuring of our business and I'm just not sure how possible that is between myself and my business partner.

Roger that. Didja semi-retire with a pension/retirement from your employer or private retirement(IRA,401K,annuity etc.)?

Retiring isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, IMO. The biggest problem is that people look forward to the day they can stop working, but in doing that, they forget to enjoy TODAY.

Never forget: TODAY is the best day of your life. Not yesterday, not tomorrow.

TODAY. I love today. I live for today.

Good luck my man....

My wife and I are both retired. I turned 60 in December but they convinced me to stay on for awhile.... so I work 3 days a week unless I’m on a trip.

I’m really enjoying being semi-retired.

But I’m truly blessed and lucky bec I really do like the Disaster Recovery work.

But don’t be hesitant to retire the water is fine cmon in.

Thank you sir and I am happier than shiite for you and yours.

I am self-employed and ain't nobody gonna be asking me stay on. My business is not really the kind of business that can be sold. When it's time to hang it up,my business partner and I have to figure out a way to disengage and divide up what's left in a way that is fair to both of us. Coming up with a value of what is left might be kinda hard to determine. He'll be working longer than me too. He has a daughter that will be a freshman in college next year and a son who will be 12 in June. My business partner is 59 and doesn't live a simple life like me. He lives beyond his means.

Realistically,I have to work at least until I turn 62 in November 2020 and Social Security has nothing to do with that. It has to do with a potential financial liability that coincidentally ends in November 2020. So some of the changes in 2019 are finding ways to curb some spending in 2019 which I have done. Making more changes too and all of them will extend into 2020.

High-class challenges my friend. It's all good really.

So I went to a Social Security/Medicare workshop at my credit union last night. It was mostly about Social Security. I am guessing there were about 50-60 people there. Learned a few things and got some things to think about. I turned 60 in November and ain't planning on drawing SS for a few years but it's time to do a bit more detailed retirement planning and to factor SS/Medicare into it.

You're an anomaly. You have the Stars and Bars for your avatar, which could get you beaten half to death on a Liberal college campus; and yet you call yourself a Democrat. You are a member of a political party that seeks to destroy every vestage of American history you (and I) consider important, not because of any political cause it represents but simply because it is history.
You are a member of a political party that voted to prevent a doctor from saving the life of a baby that survives an abortion.* Doctor and nurses would be required by law to stand by and watch that baby die without rendering aid.
How do you justify that? The people you have joined are more akin to animals than they are to human beings. What is it down deep in your soul that permits you to accept that? I understand how the Leftists on the forum accept it...they're trash. But you have always seemed to be different.

What does any of that have to do with this thread topic? Why is it that your side of the aisle here can't discuss ANY topic without dragging partisan politics into it? Have a good life sir.

This is not about politics. It's about your heart and your soul, what you teach your children and your grandchildren, and where you will spend eternity.

It's cool. I should know better than try to post a thread like this in PJ. PJ is not the place for this. Even threads in Photos, Religion and History et.al. get highjacked with flaming bullshit. I won't make this mistake again.

Threads have been hijacked since we came here, @bdtex . You know that.
I support your avatar. Most on the right will support it. But sadly, your pals on the Left hate it. Naw...........they won't say so..........but you know and I know that they are intolerant of that particular flag.

I am glad you have the courage to use that avatar.
