This article is part of a series on the
Constitution of the
United States of America

The Thirteenth Amendment (Amendment XIII) to the United States Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. In Congress, it was passed by the Senate on April 8, 1864, and by the House on January 31, 1865. The amendment was ratified by the required number of states on December 6, 1865. On December 18, 1865, Secretary of State William H. Seward proclaimed its adoption. It was the first of the three Reconstruction Amendments adopted following the American Civil War.

In mid-January 1865, Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax estimated the amendment to be five votes short of passage. Ashley postponed the vote.[56] At this point, Lincoln intensified his push for the amendment, making direct emotional appeals to particular members of Congress.[57] On January 31, 1865, the House called another vote on the amendment, with neither side being certain of the outcome. With 183 House members present, 122 would have to vote "aye" to secure passage of the resolution; however eight Democrats abstained, reducing the number to 117. Every Republican (84), Independent Republican (2) and Unconditional Unionist (16) supported the measure, as well as 14 Democrats, almost all of them lame ducks, and 3 Unionists. The amendment finally passed by a vote of 119 to 56,[58] narrowly reaching the required two-thirds majority.[59] The House exploded into celebration, with some members openly weeping.[60] Black onlookers, who had only been allowed to attend Congressional sessions since the previous year, cheered from the galleries.

So you say all those Democrats turned Republican let review thee Republican platform of Lincoln's time.

Resolved: That the maintenance of the principles promulgated in the Declaration of Independence, and embodied in the Federal Constitution are essential to the preservation of our Republican institutions, and that the Federal Constitution, the rights of the States, and the union of the States, must and shall be preserved.

So if you believe in States Rights you were a Lincoln Republican.

The right of the people to keep and bear arms has been infringed.

If you are thinking about joining the NRA you were a Lincoln Republican.

That the freedom of speech and of the press has been abridged;

If claimed fake news like Trump you were a Lincoln Republican.

Murders, robberies, and arsons have been instigated and encouraged, and the offenders have been allowed to go unpunished;
http://www.ushistory.org/gop/convention_1856republicanplatform.htm

If you were talking about S. Chicago like Trump you were a Lincoln Republican.

Resolved, That appropriations by Congress for the improvement of rivers and harbors, of a national character, required for the accommodation and security of our existing commerce, are authorized by the Constitution, and justified by the obligation of the Government to protect the lives and property of its citizens.

If you wanted to build a wall like Trump you were a Lincoln Republican.

So we have shown the vote and who voted to end slavery and what they stood for and I don't think todays Democrats are or have anything that resembles Lincoln, but here is your chance as Democrats to prove that point with links, and actual proof although I posted the facts above. Let's see if you really supported Lincoln's ideals and can explain why Republican values are the same and your values don't align with Lincoln's.

The Confederacy took the stand for the sort of “states’ rights” the right continues to assert today. Trump’s wall is not something that improves our security or the economy. And Trump’s attacks on “fake news” (which is what he calls news) are attacks on a free press.

It's the "free press" that is doing all of the attacking. 2.5 years of completely false attack pieces on Trump. Trump, just as an American citizen alone, much less the president, has every right to criticize the press for that.

And to call for shutting it down. And to encourage stochastic terrorism against critical media outlets. And to use the power of the government to punish them financially. Right?

Btw, most of what he complains about are 100% true stories. He does not have a right to only uncritical praise from the media.

Lincoln also ran on the campaign slogan, “Vote yourself a farm and horses.” So if you believe in using votes to get “free stuff” from the government, you may be a Lincoln Republican.

Abraham Lincoln Refers to the Republican party promise supporting a law granting free homesteads to settlers of western lands.

It's like New York's free tax program for businesses. It's how they got the West settled. It's not like the stupid idea of free tuition, which is just shifting the burden.

The right to slaves. Funny how every state that seceded was run by denocratics. Just to keep slavery.

It's about the basis of our country, consent of the governed. The idea the Federal government conquers States and forces them to remain in the union is an anathema to self determination and our founding principles. And it's why the Federal government no longer fears the people, which is why they don't respect our rights. If we object, they can simply conquer us again

Trump’s wall is not something that improves our security or the economy
You know that you're lying, which is why you oppose the wall so fervently. You don't think it wouldn't work, you know it would. If you thought it wouldn't work, you wouldn't fight it nearly as hard as you fight it.

And it's so inane that a wall doesn't work. A million people a year run across the desert because there is no wall. That they are going to scale a 30 foot fence with electronic security like it isn't there is just to absurd. Go look at a 3 story building and tell me you're going to carry a ladder that big across the desert, you're going to take your family and all your belongings to the top, then you're going to repel the whole shebang down the other side on your back. And you're going to do all that while you outmaneuver border security watching you with cameras and drones.

Your lies are pathetic

Yes, you've mentioned the real press is the press that only tells you what you want to hear. To believe the press should say anything but leftist dogma is to attack all the press.

Just more of your stupid crap

You whiners consider any criticism of anything "encouraging stochastic terrorism". How dare people exercise their free speech rights around you fascists.

It's funny how the very things liberals are against are in the 1856 Republican convention.

Border Security,

States Rights,

Fake news,

Murders being unpunished,

Yet they claim to be these people.

1. The people prefer a centralized government under which there is less oppression and which is easier to concentrate power against than separate additional oppression by 50 oppressive states.
2. Walls work to do what? Immigrate illegally without sponsorship from the cartels? I’m against it because of all the people who will die because of it. If killing thousands (at a minimum) is your goal, the wall will work.
3. No, the decent press is the press that checks facts and values their reputation for honesty. You call any press that does so “leftist” because the press cannot make the leaders on the right look like anything but the monsters they are without being terribly, terribly dishonest.

Agreed. So now you agree with Trump calling the leftist media that doesn't do either of those fake news. Nice, you're coming around

Trump calls the “decent press” as just described “fake news” because the facts they report make him look bad.
