Made a quick run down there this afternoon. It was the anniversary of the battle and I had to go. There weren't any commemorative events happening. Just me and 3 fishermen there today. Very hot,the grounds we're damp and mosquitoes were thick. I had long pants, long sleeve shirt and hiking boots on. Was there about an hour and a half.

Had a better camera and photography skills this time. The monument to Lt. Richard("Dick") Dowling and the rest of Co. F(the "Davis Guards"),1st Texas Heavy Artillery, the Confederate defenders of Fort Griffin at Sabine Pass.

In the town of Sabine Pass, there is a monument to Lt. Dowling and his men and their actions at the Battle Of Sabine Pass. It was erected by the Texas Division of the United Daughters Of The Confederacy.

I was mistakenly thinking this battle was fought after the war was actually over, until I saw you had posted the date of the battle. Do you recall the name of the battle that was fought after the war was over (I could Google it but that would be pretentious). I'm pretty sure it took place in Texas as well.

Palmito Ranch on May 13,1865. The war did not end at Appomattox Courthouse. Lee surrendered the ANV at Appomattox. Other Confederate forces in the Eastern Theater and forces in the Western and Trans-Mississippi Theaters surrendered later. Palmito Ranch was the last battle of the Civil War.

The Union had a bad day there.

I have been to the Museum of the Confederacy, the battle flags, Stewart's accoutrement's and those of Lee were awesome. Sixteen Confederate vets in my ancestry.

Salute !

I too have been to Appomattox. I still think of one of the last to die that went through the whole war and was killed there. I have been to several battlefields over the years. I also have a considerable Civil War library.

Most of mine were from No.& So. Carolina on my fathers side. He married a Yankee.

I am also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Zeb Vance Camp #15. One member there has twenty eight ancestors in the service.

Got busy yesterday and didn't do an anniversary bump. Couldn't make it down there this year and that's probably a good thing because it was brutally hot here yesterday. For many years after the battle one of the Union ships sink, the USS Clifton, was visible in the channel. It was finally salvaged. One of the items became a permanent display at the State Historic Site. The walking beam of the USS Clifton:
