Night, are you channeling Jack? For heavens sake , the Auto Industry has been my source of income since I was married at one month short of 21. We are now long into the next generation.

I would think I know a little by this time. Another poster told you what the Japanese companies did with tax breaks, and our Governments blessing.
You're welcome to hate the Japanese, but you don't get to have your own, personal set of facts.

Thank you,Squareshot. Many of our companies have been destroyed thanks to short sighted management. Then we have the Ghouls like Romney.

Did you know he bought up stock in Delphi when they were in trouble, and then refused to accept an agreement, thus causing Delphi to collapse? This is why you see Congress trying to get the DELPHI white Collar pension back.

On a side note,my Husband worked for DELCO,(Dayton Engineering Laboratory,) for well over 30 years. Before it was sold and became DELPHI.

And to think this crook, who ruined many lives came that close to the White House!

Hi Mary Anne: People won't believe there really is a truck until they are run over. I wonder if Romney could have figured out some way to rob the U.S. GOVERNMENT like he did in most of the companies that he dealt with. And we may have the honor of v0ting for him again(gag). I have heard many stories about how he got his money and as near as I can tell none of it was good. I think some folks would vote for the devil himself before a black man. And maybe that was what they did in the last election.

Romney bankrupted company after company to make his fortune. He destroyed jobs, robbed people of their pensions, and planned the same thing for the Government.

He planned to privatize everything in sight. We can see what privatization has done to our Security.

We are now paying 70% of our tax dollars to private companies. You can see the result,a limitless low ranking worker can expose our whole security system.

When the next bombing happens,I do not want to hear a word from those who think Snowden is a hero. He has already lied about himself, and how important he is.

He was staying in a $330 a night Hotel! Who is paying his bill? He only made $120,000 a year for 3 months.

MaryAnne,

Bullshit is bullshit, even when it's a friend's bullshit. What American automobile manufacturers learned from working with the Japanese helped to save the American auto industry. Detroit was building garbage back in the 1970s. Now, we're building world class automobiles and building them efficiently. Otherwise, my wife wouldn't be driving a Buick right now.

No, I don't build cars, but my brother does. I've been involved in building control systems and writing software for automobile manufacturers, so I do know a little bit about the industry. Having been something of a motorhead and shadetree mechanic growing up, I also know a bit about the history of American automobile manufacturing.

Hi MaryAnne: your family seems really involved in the auto industry. Do they have opinions on how Detroit fell by the wayside.

Night, some of what you say is true, American car companies built some crappy cars in the 70's and early 80's, old plants , old technology, stultifying engineering, a sense that "business as usual" would continue to keep market share and profits. That all came to a screeching halt when the recession of 1980 practically shut down the US auto industry.

The dealership I worked for went under in 1983, I made $85,000 in 1982, and $19,000 in 1983, that is when I had to leave Oklahoma and found a management job at a Tennessee Dealer using a head hunter. After that period, GM, at least, started trying to improve their products and service. Warranties went from 12 mo/12k miles to 36mo/36k miles in the late 80's, GM partnered with Toyota(NUMMI) to learn Japanese techniques and systems, the Geo Prism was a product of that partnership, basically a Corolla with a little GM pizzazz. there have been plenty of imported cars that sucked as bad as many of the American ones, any 10 worst will have some imports included.

Saturn was a new way to market cars, it kind of worked OK, at least it was innovative. We have come a long way in the 42 years I have been doing this, and I can tell you, today's GM cars are as good as any major manufacturer's cars in the world.

Square, I have worked in the auto business for over 40 years, and have seen the good times and the bad. Right now is one of the good times, our sales are strong, the dealer I work for just spent 10 million on a new high tech ultra-modern facility, and the cars we are selling are the best GM has ever made. Check out this baby:
Hi OG: I am truly glad for your good fortune. I can't look at picture because of my computer. Were you ever close too layoff in this recent slowdown. It really seems that the auto industry is back, in different parts of the country.

I was forced into early retireement in 2005 so the Dealer I had worked for for 21 years could give my job to his son-in-law. I took it easy for a couple of years, got bored and did some part time work for another Dealership where one of my old friends was the GSM, then in 2008 disaster struck again and another old line Dealer I was working for went under. This time I thought I was retired for good, but in Sept of2009, another old friend said business was picking up and they needed someone with my skill set to set up their internet sales department, I have been having fun doing this job for the last almost 4 years.

Hi MaryAnne: your family seems really involved in the auto industry. Do they have opinions on how Detroit fell by the wayside.

I can only speak for what I watched happen. Old Gaffer clarified some of what I said about the Engineering.

Bad management, short term profit for the stockholders, shove the junk out the door,no matter how bad. We quit buying Chevy's in 1969 because the quality was so bad and went with Oldsmobile's.

A succession of poor management, who would not listen to their own Designers and Engineers. The Corporate hide bound, profit at all cost stock holders drained the company.

Of course the Union was blamed for everything, workers took cuts while Management became more bloated. Chrysler was the same way.

Lee Iacoco came back to Chrysler, borrowed 40 million from the Government, brought them back to profit in a short time, paid back the money and retired again. New management came in,sold the company to Daimler, and made millions for the CEO,who promptly drained Chrysler of the cash they had built up,then claimed Chrysler was not profitable. My Son attended many of the meetings,so we know what happened there.

As to GM,after a series of CEO's Wagoner took over. He made 23 million a year, but the company made no profit from 2004 on.

When the Government took over wagoner, then Hutchinson were shown the door. The hide bound management was broken, experts brought in,Designers and Engineers, and brought the company back to profit.

New hires came in at about half what the older workers made, concessions by the unions, and now workers are getting bonuses, some almost half their yearly pay,for quality work, and you can see what is happening now.

The whole structure had become bloated over the years, and it hurt many of the workers, the Dealers.

I go into the Dealership today and get service.

Old Gaffer can tell you more about Dealerships than I can.He knows that subject,I do not. I asked him questions before I bought my new Buick. He is one of the good ones:)

5 GM plants were closed here in Dayton. Detroit became a wasteland, but I think it was more than just the Auto companies. They had a series of crooks as Mayors, but Wahbooz is the expert on that town.

Dayton is rebuilding as a high tech town.with companies joining up with UD. GE built a plant right on UD grounds.UD is known for the Engineering programs. My Son graduated from there.

So you disagree with everything I have posted? Just asking.
No. I don't disagree with everything that you posted. I merely continue to stand by what I have posted in this thread. I'm old enough to remember when hating the Japanese was considered quite normal as a result of WWII. In spite of that, I give the Japanese credit for their technological and management ingenuity and understand that we Americans have benefited greatly from learning these techniques and applying them in our own automotive industry. Auto manufacturing is, and has been for several decades now, an international industry.

On the hating of Japanese, you just had to be there. We rebuilt the country,as we did Europe.
You are not old enough to remember that.

We are doing the same thing now by destroying, then rebuilding in the Middle East while our own country falls apart!

The succeeding generations of Japanese are not the WW2 generation.

You assume quite a bit regarding what I do, or do not know.

OG, You have truly been thru the wringer but sounds like you have survived it all and ended up with the best job of your life. Congratulations, you are most fortunate in being talented in all the right places.
