Pres Obama on his meeting with Pope Francis

Nothing Obama says or does is worth my time....I see since you posted this on Saturday and nobody has responded, it must not be worth anyone time! Lol!
I think that Pope Francis and President Obama MAY be more of the "same mind" as any Pope-President in my lifetime. Although....Reagan and JP II may give them a run for their money.

President Obama is the secular leader of our Democracy. It is - virtually by definition, impossible for a sectarian like The Pope and the leader of a modern democracy, to ever be in exact agreement.

But...if one likes what The Pope is representing and the American president is at least similarly disposed, that SHOULD be worth people's time.

Well, Julie, the video was nice. But more than the video,at least for me, the pictures that were all over the web were very touching. Obama has his President Face, like they all do. And then he's got his real face. You usually only see it in candid shots of him with his his girls. But it was evident in the candids of him and Francis. Real happiness/glad to be there.
According to the Vatican the pope talked quite a bit about religious freedom, too.

I realize I'm just guessing, but I don't think there was an ounce of political motivation for O wanting this meeting.

Did you guys hear about the little girl who got to speak to Francis before he met with Obama about her dad who was arrested and due to be deported? She pled her Dad's case and asked Francis to talk to O about him.
And Francis did talk to Obama about him.

Well, a few days later maybe you saw the picture of Francis at Confession....At the time he was making that Confession, that little girl's Dad went free. He's still got his legal issues to deal with, but he was allowed to go back home to his family.

That's a really good thing that came from that meeting, and it SHOULD interest people.

Did you know that some people believe that the Vatican is where the Antichrist will come from? Not saying I believe it, but it is something to think about. Nobody knows for sure....

Caroljo there's an excellent book called "Catholicism and Fundamentalism" that explores this whole thought process. When it originated, where from, why, etc.....

Pope Francis could make a tangible difference regarding poverty and income inequality if he advised his US Bishops to make public statements in support of raising the minimum wage.
I think what you're suggesting, goes against the "essential" Pope Francis. You're asking that he involve himself directly in a proximate, civil, political process. As righteous as an increase in the minimum wage is, commenting on it specifically, would represent an entirely new and different direction for him.

Thus far, it's been looking like people kinda like the direction he's taking right now.

The message has been pretty constant as long as I can remember: Exploiting people is a bad thing. Treating people with dignity is the right thing. Particularly undocumented workers. That covers a whole spectrum of issues that includes wages. It's interesting though that folks want churches to shut up about socalled "religious views" when those views are inconvenient but then want the same churches to speak up on a religious view that just happens to match your political view.

The answer isn't simply to raise minimum wage. Increase minimum wage and corporations will only respond by cutting jobs and raising prices. The idea has to be to inspire the people who make those decisions to let go of some of their profit for the sake of people. I think that's what Pope Francis talks about. But until that becomes the trend, low income families will suffer either job loss or shrinking buying power if minimum wage goes up.

Back when Benedict announced his retirement, I was visiting another message board. Can't call them right wing. Can't call them conservative. I think just "nuts" would have been appropriate. But there were a handful of fundamentalist evangelicals who were positively gleeful over Benedict's announcement because to them, this indicated that the next pope would be the last, the antichrist, and that meant the rapture was just around the corner. The big telltale sign was that he would call himself Peter, and that would be the thing that clued all the "true Christians" into the timeline that Jesus Himself said they'd never know ahead of time. As far as they were concerned, it was coming any minute, the RC Church is the whore of Babylon about to get bitchslapped.

They have this whole theology. It's funny because they claim to be sola scriptura people but this particular theology relies on Nostradamus and the writings that may or may not be properly attributed to a saint. And that alone is funny because they call us evil and pagans for believing in saints' communication with heaven while they were still alive, but they're quick to embrace this one saint's alleged wisdom from heaven when they need it.

If you are interested you can find copies of that book on ebay for two or three dollars.

I think of you as a good true Christian woman, even though we disagree on many issues Can you explain why Christians oppose everyone in this country especially the poor, having health care.? Isn't that what Jesus would have wanted?

Great book, IMHO. It was really instrumental in my own conversion, along with John 6.
