Pres Obama on his meeting with Pope Francis

Back when Benedict announced his retirement, I was visiting another message board. Can't call them right wing. Can't call them conservative. I think just "nuts" would have been appropriate. But there were a handful of fundamentalist evangelicals who were positively gleeful over Benedict's announcement because to them, this indicated that the next pope would be the last, the antichrist, and that meant the rapture was just around the corner. The big telltale sign was that he would call himself Peter, and that would be the thing that clued all the "true Christians" into the timeline that Jesus Himself said they'd never know ahead of time. As far as they were concerned, it was coming any minute, the RC Church is the whore of Babylon about to get bitchslapped.

They have this whole theology. It's funny because they claim to be sola scriptura people but this particular theology relies on Nostradamus and the writings that may or may not be properly attributed to a saint. And that alone is funny because they call us evil and pagans for believing in saints' communication with heaven while they were still alive, but they're quick to embrace this one saint's alleged wisdom from heaven when they need it.

If you are interested you can find copies of that book on ebay for two or three dollars.
I've heard all of this too.....but I don't believe anyone knows for sure where the antichrist will come from. It was also a messageboard that I heard this....one that is centered on the Rapture. I do believe in the Rapture, but will never believe someone that says they can figure out Revelation! I don't agree with everything that is related to Catholics, but I also don't believe they are all wrong. None of us, anyone that is Christian, know the whole truth. I will look into buying that book....sounds interesting!

Great book, IMHO. It was really instrumental in my own conversion, along with John 6.
Scott Hahn is another guy who lays it all out so well. If you've read him, you know he was a biblical scholar and theologian who researched every possible angle in his fight NOT to convert.

Well, Julie, the video was nice. But more than the video,at least for me, the pictures that were all over the web were very touching. Obama has his President Face, like they all do. And then he's got his real face. You usually only see it in candid shots of him with his his girls. But it was evident in the candids of him and Francis. Real happiness/glad to be there.
According to the Vatican the pope talked quite a bit about religious freedom, too.

I realize I'm just guessing, but I don't think there was an ounce of political motivation for O wanting this meeting.

Did you guys hear about the little girl who got to speak to Francis before he met with Obama about her dad who was arrested and due to be deported? She pled her Dad's case and asked Francis to talk to O about him.
And Francis did talk to Obama about him.

Well, a few days later maybe you saw the picture of Francis at Confession....At the time he was making that Confession, that little girl's Dad went free. He's still got his legal issues to deal with, but he was allowed to go back home to his family.

That's a really good thing that came from that meeting, and it SHOULD interest people.
One of the many things I think people - especially non-Catholics - appreciate most about Pope Francis is that his smile and sense of humor seem SO genuine.

I love the story about the Vatican groundskeeper who gave the Pope his restored Renault. Let's be honest. It IS just an old Renault and anyone who knows cars must know that it's MAX value couldn't been much over the price of a dinner at Applebees! Still....anyone remotely in his position who had a clue, would've "graciously accepted it".

But ya know.....Pope Francis gives me the impression that he was tickled pink by this gift and that he thought it was REALLY cool. This may not sound like much to a lotta people. But....it signals a whole lot to me.

I think what you're suggesting, goes against the "essential" Pope Francis. You're asking that he involve himself directly in a proximate, civil, political process. As righteous as an increase in the minimum wage is, commenting on it specifically, would represent an entirely new and different direction for him.

Thus far, it's been looking like people kinda like the direction he's taking right now.

I was being sarcastic, of course. I don't desire any contributions regarding political issues from any Bishops. That said, they do tend to inject themselves into US politics -- in a very selective and partisan manner.

Yes, I have a lot of his talks from Lighthouse. I gather he is not all that well respected by other "professional" theologians, but I don't know enough to tell whether the opposition is because he is othodox or something else. From what I can tell, he backs up his positions.

Well, he says he lost a lot of friends when he converted. He and his wife, Kimberly wrote a book about that journey. It's called "Rome Sweet Home"....very good. It seems to be pretty helpful to folks inquiring about the faith. He's pretty well regarded in the Catholic Church. He knows the Bible and Church history/Church fathers completely.
