Absolutely. I hate sockpuppets. It is hard to ferret them out but I think you can look at location as well when things are adding up. You don't have to be exactly right. For instance if you see a familiar sockpuppet and the IP is different, look for location and familiarity. Many sites use leaning evidence and to me if someone is not a sockpuppet they will let you know in no uncertain terms. Dynamic IP's are a pain but you can overcome that with a combo of location, familiarity and some other tools.naturally.
but, you're not opposed to ferreting out those who dont have the courage to play it straight, too... yes?
As an aside.. in most cases all it takes is politely asking. rather than sockpuppeting. (it sucks to have to relearn, when their original nic/persona can be restored..
anyhoo.. I guess the hunt is on in the absence of that..
I have no idea if anyone is a sockpuppet with multiple IP's so for me the onus is on me not to accuse and then lie directly about someone while lying to prove it. Guessing now and then is fine. Saying the poster has to say if they changed their name keeping the same IP (which is not the same as a sockpuppet) is nice but really up to them as a name change is pretty normal plus you have control under those circumstances. It is only when someone is a sockpuppet with multiple IP's that I'd dig deeper.
In any case posting someone's email as if someone hiding who they are would come as their known email name is after being comical, not cool. In any case, PJ and all sites have always had daily sockpuppets but at least PJ knows that about ten of them are probably one person. LOL
Do location searches when all else fails.
