There is zero tolerance to bring a weapon to school but the school they let this guy do this. They let him do this because of his religion

AUBURN, Wash. -- Like all religions, the Sikh faith is steeped in tradition. One of the most revered is the carrying of a Kirpan, a sword or dagger, at all times. "People will even wear it in the shower. It's kind of hard for others to understand," said Jaswinder Singh, spokesman for the Gurudwara Sikh Center of Seattle. The concept of the Kirpan is taught to children at an early age. The dagger is considered an instrument of social justice. "For the people who are formally initiated to the Kirpan, it's very near and dear," said Singh. But is it appropriate to bring to school?

A few weeks ago at Auburn's Gildo Rey Elementary, a Sikh family approached the school telling them their little boy would be carrying a Kirpan every day. That didn't sit well with some.

It would be downright stupid to allow that knife in a school......especially if its main purpose was "social justice".

Went looking at wikipedia about this. Apparently here in the U.S. there have been a number of court cases about this, and in NY and Ohio it has been deemed unconstitutional to disallow the wearing of the kirpan.
So, in the same school district that a kid can be suspended or expelled for carrying a pocket knife or a plastic lego gun, this knife is allowed to be kept on the student's person for religious purposes. Why? Because religious freedom and the freedom to live faithfully according to one's beliefs is that important here in America.
In other news, a couple in Idaho are being threatened with jail time for not performing weddings for same sex couples.

But in real news...those Idaho folks are idiots...

...There is one major problem with all this outrage, according to city officials in Coeur d’Alene: The owners of the Hitching Post Wedding Chapel do not face arrest or fines or any other penalty for refusing to marry same-sex couples.

The lawsuit argues that Coeur d’Alene’s non-discrimination ordinance -- which was passed last year and bars businesses and public accommodations from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity -- will “unconstitutionally” force the Knapps to either “violate their religious convictions and ministerial vows” by performing same-sex weddings or face jail time and fines. According to the suit, the city has “privately and publicly threatened to apply” the ordinance to the Hitching Post.

However, according to city officials and the lawsuit itself, the Hitching Post filed papers with the Idaho Secretary of State identifying itself as a religious corporation on Oct. 6, the day before the 9th Circuit struck down Idaho’s ban. The city’s ordinance explicitly states that religious corporations are exempt from the law...

Now...about the Kirpan. It is a religious symbol. It, as shown in the NY case, can be rendered useless as a weapon through various means, basically locking it into the sheath.

...Rajdeep Singh, the group's policy director, said the issue of kirpans in schools doesn't often come up, because not all Sikhs wear them and others wear them under their clothes.

He noted that the items are probably less dangerous than the scissors that elementary school students in Auburn are required to bring to class.

"It would be helpful to remind parents that this is not a weapon," he said.

Many agencies across the nation have created policies that accommodate the ceremonial knives, the coalition said. The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service allows kirpan-carrying Sikhs into federal buildings, it said.

"This is not something that's new to us or most districts in the area," Foster said...

I have a friend that teaches high school in Auburn, WA. I"d better alert him.
You don't think your teacher friend is aware of what is going on in his district?

A previous ruling in California resulted in the same decision...

...In southern California, the Board of the Jurupa Unified School District recently enacted a provision allowing Sikh students to carry a kirpan — a sword or blade that is an article of the Sikh faith — on its school campuses:

Under the new policy, parents agree to sign a statement that requires the kirpan — a daggerlike object that is a sacred article of faith — to be worn under clothing, to have the blade dulled, to be soldered or sewn into its sheath so it cannot be removed and to have a blade that is 2 1/2 inches or less...

Huffpo? No.
The lawfirm defending the Knapps just filed a complaint on the 17th of October because the issue has not been resolved as Huffpo says. And they filed it because the Knapps still face possible jail time and a daily fine of 1000 dollars.

As for the Kirpan.....If you wanted to, you could poke someone's eyes out with a cross or even a pen. You could kill someone with a heavy textbook or, like your article mentioned, school scissors. In the face of that, not sure why a Kirpan, or even a pocket knife or nail file, are especially a problem, except that zero tolerance policies are so ridiculous and useless.

Well hell, gigi. All you have to do is use the SC ruling on Citizen United or Hobbly Lobby to get what you and your right wing buds want, eh?

It said it COULD be rendered harmless. Was this one? Or many others? If they guarantee it is, then no problem.

She wasn't bitching....she was stating a fact. One, it seems, that you don't agree with.

Two days and two lefty men addressing a woman expressing her opinion as "bitchin" and "whining". That's that liberal male for you, though.

Thanks for bringing up Hobby Lobby. Americans having to go all the way to the SC to maintain a freedom that's guaranteed by the Constitution. And who caused that? A whiny little man not so different than you, Write On, who thinks abdicating personal responsibility is more important than upholding and defending the Constitution.

I don't click on the 'dumb' rating...so you won't see it. But THAT was really dumb.
What Gigi said was the truth. You just have a problem with that for some reason.
I questioned gigi. Let's see what she has to say.

You, on the other hand, are set on defensive mode.

Not good while you're trying to argue your case.

He told me to quit my bitchin' and basically told you to shut up. I'm surprised he hasn't told one of us to get in that kitchen and fix him a sandwich.

I'm just pointing out the subservitude that you con women so selectively choose from your 'leaders' while they run roughshod over you. Damn, if it wasn't for feminists, women, thanks to your ilk, would be stoned here in America. F'n have a little self respect, would ya?
