Maybe the Russians will bag another airliner, eh?

Istanbul (CNN)Tensions in the Middle East ratcheted up dangerously Wednesday, a day after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane, with the Turkish President accusing Russia of deceit and Russia announcing it would deploy anti-aircraft missiles to Syria.

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu said on his ministry's Twitter feed that the country would deploy S-400 defense missile systems to its Hmeymim air base near Latakia, on Syria's Mediterranean coast.

The missiles have a range of 250 kilometers (155 miles), according to themissilethreat.com website. The Turkish border is less than 30 miles away.

And Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told Russian TV on Wednesday that Russia has "serious doubts" that Turkey's downing of its warplane Tuesday was "an unpremeditated act."

"It looks very much like a planned provocation," Lavrov said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned what he said was the violation of Turkish airspace by Russian warplanes, calling the incident an infringement of his country's sovereignty.

He charged Russia with propping up the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad -- a regime he said was inflicting terrorism on its own people. His remarks came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Turkey of being "the terrorists' accomplices" for shooting down a plane he claimed was on an anti-terrorism mission.

Erdogan disputed that claim in a speech Wednesday.

"There is no Daesh" in the area where the Russian planes were flying, Erdogan said, using another name for ISIS. "Do not deceive us! We know the locations of Daesh."

The Russian S-400 missile system is about the best they've got.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/russia-deploys-advanced-s-400-air-defence-missile-system-in-syria-after-turkey-downs-one-of-its-jets-a6749041.html
Russia put on a further show of military strength by deploying a missile cruiser near to the coast off Latakia and sending its most modern air-defence missile system to a Syrian air base 30 miles from the Turkish border. With a range of up to 250 miles, the S-400 could easily strike Turkish targets.

"Turkey and Russia have backed opposing sides since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, but Moscow’s decision to launch air strikes in September deepened tensions between the two countries.

"The downing of the Russian warplane has plunged the relationship to a new low and the fallout threatens to jeopardise talks to end the war in Syria.

"On 25 November Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, ordered a powerful air-defence system to be sent to northern Syria and warned tourists against travelling to Turkey as he sought pay-back for the attack.

"The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, said his nation had 'no intention to go to war with Turkey' but described the attack as a 'planned provocation'”.

Payback for a planned provocation sounds like war by another name. Should it happen during a US presidential election campaign, which party benefits?

So why did the Russians provoke the Turks?

So they could bring in their most power anti-aircraft missile system?

The Turks are supplying IS and co in Syria. Foreign fighters cross the Turkish Syrian border on mass. Oil tankers from IS held Syrian oil fields cross the Turkish border to their destination. Turks are killing Kurds not IS. Kurds are an effective guerrilla fighting force against IS and co. Turkey wants that chunk of Syria for itself.

Lavrov and the French are holding talks soon about closing that border. If that border is closed the War could end.

Also --- in their contracts with the US, when buying any US war planes, rockets etc - permission has to be asked and given by the US for their use in any attack. The Turkish attack was premeditated so was US permission asked for and given? - Or has Turkey gone rogue within NATO?

I have posted Lavrov's press conference in a TP, it is worth listening too.

high stakes poker
No, that border is at the crux of the War. If closed the war is over. Turkey was foolish but maybe because it went over the line, the border will be closed and that would be the end of that escapade. And Syrians could go home. France and Russia are meeting to discuss the closing of the Turkish Syrian border next week, I think.

Wars are not for the poor simple minded like you Max ----

The Turkish border is what is supplying this War, both ways, Oil out and supplies and fighters in.

The Turks are killing the Kurds not IS.

France and Russia want the Turkish Syrian border closed. Close the border and the War is over.

Turkey would have had to ask American permission to attack the Russian plane. Did they? Did they ask for and were they given permission for the pre planned attack, by Washington? Or have they gone rogue within NATO?

Correction:

The s-400 interceptor is the best on the Planet....it has been suspect in the downing of several f-22's that are normally interceptor-proof.

Bag another air liner? Yes I think that is highly likely.....I would also look for the sinking of Passenger ships and the sharp increase of internal attacks by hired mercenaries in the large Cities of Turkey. I'm not sure what the Turks felt they had to gain by this action but I'm pretty sure they are going to pay a price much, much larger than the worth of the Russian plane and a body count hundreds of times that of the two murdered pilots. Additionally the tourism will take big hit because tourists will be very nervous about the prospect of flying to Turkey.
All in all this was not a smart move.

The price? Closing of the Turkish-Syrian border --------------- leading to the end of War, leading to the end of Turkey's dream of taking a good chunk of Syria ---

In addition to that Putin is never going to allow this action without exacting something in return.....and you can be sure it's going to be a dilly.

Russia, I mean Russia not the old Soviets, but Russia today - does not go looking for War, it reacts - true, when it does fight it doesn't mess about. But he knows this is a powder keg --- he isn't a fool. Plus Turkey and Russia do a lot a lot of business, Russia is full of Turkish construction businesses and workers and Turkey is full of Russian tourists etc.
But the very very very worse thing anyone can do to Turkey is close the borders that it was trying to warn Russia off ---- End of War.

I agree....however Putin has an entire military full of young men who are watching this and waiting to see what will be done to defend two murdered pilots. These are not war losses...this was out and out murder...something far more personal and much more impact-ful on a personal level than a battlefield loss. Putin has no choice....he will have to strike back in some form other than simply geo-political IMO.
