Trump to Duterte: "Unbelievable Job on the Drug Problem"

"Trump Praises Duterte for Philippine Drug Crackdown in Call Transcript
By DAVID E. SANGER and MAGGIE HABERMANMAY 23, 2017"

"WASHINGTON — President Trump praised President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines in a phone call last month for doing an 'unbelievable job on the drug problem' in the island nation where the government has sanctioned gunning down suspects in the streets. Mr. Trump also boasted that the United States has “two nuclear submarines” off the coast of North Korea but said he does not want to use them."

Duterte has openly bragged about personally committing extrajudicial killings while serving as mayor.

Trump has just invited the killer to visit the White House.

Another swamp drained.o_O

"Mr. Trump placed the call and began it by congratulating Mr. Duterte for the government-sanctioned attacks on drug suspects.

"The program has been widely condemned by human rights groups around the world because extrajudicial killings have taken thousands of lives without arrest or trial.

"In March, the program was criticized in the State Department’s annual human rights report, which referred to 'apparent governmental disregard for human rights and due process.'”

"A day after declaring martial law on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, President Rodrigo Duterte issued an ominous message for enforcing it.

“'Martial law is martial law ha,' he said. 'It will not be any different from what the president, Marcos did. I'd be harsh...'

"Given the lawlessness of Duterte’s 'war on drugs,' in which the police and their agents have been implicated in the cold-blooded killing of more than 7,000 suspected drug dealers and users, military restraint in Mindanao may be wishful thinking.

"And for Filipinos who lived through martial law under Ferdinand Marcos, Duterte’s casual reference to the late dictator should be especially alarming.

"For nearly 10 years, beginning in 1972, Philippine security forces carried out massive arbitrary arrests and detention, torture, and countless extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances for which very few were ever punished.

"The country’s downward spiral continued after martial law was lifted in 1981 until Marcos was overthrown in the 1986 'People Power' revolution."

He is doing a wonderful job on the drug problem. He is killing off users and dealers and those associated with them who are potential/future users and dealers.

The people are actually happy about it. The ones whining about it are not the ones who have to step over addicts everyday to get out of their hovels.

How many innocent people have his hired killers done away with.

Where's your compassion, Conservative?

"Given his abysmal human rights record, if Rodrigo Duterte was not Philippines' president would the U.S. let him in?"

Lol. describe innocent. Drug users, drug dealers, and the people that enable them are a scourge on the rest of the population. I have no compassion or sympathy for them. They disgust me.

While I would not welcome his method's here, his methods are effective in a poor, uneducated nation that does not have the money or resources to waste on trying to fix addicts, the vast majority of whom will simply go on shooting up until they kill themselves. They have no money to prosecute these people. They have no money to lock them up. They have no money to treat them... and all the while they recruit more and more users and dealers. They have no choice but to engage in heavy tactics in order to rid their country of these foul creatures.

Has it occurred to you how rich drug addicts might use mass murder to increase their market share?

"Duterte, infamous for his hardline stance on drug abuse, admitted last Monday to using fentanyl, a highly potent painkiller used to relieve cancer patients and those suffering from other chronic conditions.

"He said he used the painkiller due to a spinal injury caused by motorcycle accidents, adding his doctor had stopped him from using it after he was found to have used more than the prescribed dosage.

"Fentanyl, according to the U.S. National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), is a 'powerful synthetic opioid analgesic that is similar to morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent'. The painkiller is also reportedly the same type of drug that killed pop legend Prince due to an accidental overdose.

Perhaps because of his problem he is more sensitive to the risks of drug use? Have you any evidence that he is a dealer or is this just another pathetic attempt to malign him? The Philippine people are thankful the no longer have to step over the bodies of addicts just to go to work and their neighborhoods are no longer run by dealers. It is like cocaine in the 80's no one cared about all the rich sniffers cause they weren't the problem everyone had to see everyday. It was the poor trouble makers and thieves supporting their habits that pissed people off because it was those people that they had to deal with.

Mass murder of poor people without evidence or trials is something you find acceptable?

"The Philippine judicial system is very slow and perceived as corrupt, enabling Duterte to act proactively and address the issue of drugs in a non-constructive way with widespread violations of human rights. Moreover, in the face of a corrupt, elite-dominated political system and a slow, ineffective, and equally corrupt judicial system, people are willing to tolerate this politician who promised something and is now delivering.

"There are no trials, so there is no evidence that the people being killed are in fact drug dealers or drug addicts.

"[This situation] shows the weakness of human rights institutions and discourse in the face of a popular and skilled populist leader. It is different from college students being arrested under the Marcos regime or activists being targeted under the first Aquino administration, when popular outcry was aroused. Drug dealers and drug addicts are a stigmatized group, and stigmatized groups always have difficulty gaining political support for the defense of their rights."

No Trials.
No Evidence.
No Problem?

Criminals engaging in criminal activity are met with force by law enforcement officers. No, I don't have a problem with that. The people who have had to live with these addicts and dealers say it's working and their neighborhoods are better. Yes, I by far value the life of a child to grow up without the scourge of addicts litering the alleys of his neighborhood than the life of the addict. One had a choice and chose wrongly.

As I said I would not support the same actions here. But I don't live in the hell those people were living in before the elected a person who did what he promised cleaning up the trash. As I aid they have no money to treat these people or try them or incarcerate them. They have few choices to protect their future from drugs.

They have no money ... because the U.S., World Bank, IMF, Chase Manhattan, WTO, Australia, etc., would rather see tens of thousands of people shot in the streets than to take back a bit more of the total wealth labor has produced from the ruling class to put an end to the murders.

The context: the Philippines, a longtime ally, former colony, and military base of the U.S. whose nationals often served in the U.S military, elected Duterte largely on the basis of a more pro-Chinese, anti-American foreign policy line, including peace negotiations with a Chinese - backed Maoist insurgency. Since his election, Duterte has courted both the U.S. and China for support, seeking leverage as a regional power broker, while the Philippines' territorial disputes with China (and, less sharply, with other powers) over control of oil, gas, and fishing in the South China Sea continues.

Trump was elected as a pro-Russian, anti-Chinese candidate--that is, a supporter of the foreign policy status quo under Obama/Kerry in contrast with the relatively anti-Russian Clinton--but has pursued a relatively pro-Chinese course since his inauguration, an overture to Taiwan, essentially apologized for afterward, aside.

Drugs are a serious social problem in the Philippines and Duterte's bloody war on them is popular. Reagan's was popular too, and it only cost us our 1st, 2nd, 4thapologizd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment rights.

As I said I would not support the same actions here. But I don't live in the hell those people were living in before the elected a person who did what he promised cleaning up the trash. There's no shortage of economic resources in the Philippines; there is an abundance of greed:

"A main cause of income inequality in the Philippines is its political culture.

"It is a spoils system which is based on relationships between leaders of political parties to other politicians and local elites. Thus, this patron-client system has created a system where a small number of powerful and wealthy families are in control of the political system.[19]

"Due to this, powerful politicians are able to fill appointive government positions with their allies and also preventing more deserving individuals without connections from being able to serve, thus denying equal opportunities in the government.[5"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_inequality_in_the_Philippines#Corruption_and_Income_inequality

The rich corrupt government and impoverish a majority of citizens then put a "strong man" in power to murder as many of their victims as possible.

Sounds like a solid model of capital accumulation.

That's how they roll in the Philippines. Good for them. Here, I'd prefer legalization.

You whine about Trump making fun of a disabled person. Obama made fun of many if not all disabled people. You poor leftists, you just can't catch a break.

The US can't deny its responsibility for how the Philippine economy has developed:

"A World Bank report showed that the richest 20 percent of the (Philippine) population 'outspent' the poorest 20 percent by more than eight times.

“'This huge disparity in expenditures can cause problems such as the lack of legitimacy, the weakening of social cohesion and the outbreak of social strife. [It can] exacerbate the existing differences and conflict between the poor and the non-poor,' the World Bank report stated.

"If left unchecked...this wide chasm could cause 'the polarization of society and the creation of social tensions that eventually undermine the process of growth and development.'

"An ADB study, on the other hand, showed vast inequalities, not only in income, but also in land distribution, welfare and human development."

Duterte and his death squads are simply the latest manifestation of US Empire in the Philippines.
