Homestead Family

I YouTube quite a bit, since I don't watch TV, mostly watching allotment gardening videos. But I stumbled upon a channel called Art and Bri, which is a young family that started homesteading a year or so ago. They are learning as they go, making mistakes and having successes - gardening, animal husbandry, raising their four young children, home schooling, home canning, etc. They have great videos, 10-20 or so minutes each, and they are charming and fun to watch. Anyway, for anyone who likes to watch non-political (they've said they're Christian, but they don't get into politics or religion at all) family-friendly, interesting videos about people figuring out how to live off the land as much as they can and enjoying their family and learning and teaching their kids along with themselves, these are great videos. They are somewhere in Eastern North Carolina (the only city I've seen them visit is Asheville, so they must be near there) in the Appalachian mountains. FWIW.

If I were at an age to start a family right now I would be tempted to do something like that - but I wouldn't go public with it. I love being with my husband and children and I've always loved farm animals. I went without phone, television, radio, current periodicals for two years and I loved it.

I agree, if I could start it right now (with everything I know now; I didn't know much when that young and wouldn't have risked it), I would do it too. Like you, I wouldn't make it public but I'm glad this couple does because it's like watching The Waltons or reading Little House. I'm really enjoying it. If you have a little bit of time, check it out. It's a great escape. I wonder if they are anywhere near @Dawg - I bet he could give them some tips.

Oh, LOL. I don't know much about NC, as you can tell. Let me know what you think. They really are novices in a lot of things, but Art (the husband) seems to know a lot - I think he worked as a missionary or maybe peace corps, in other parts of the world for awhile, and his parents - who show up in the videos sometimes - have been living off the land and raising food and bees for awhile. I think his wife, Bri, is newer to it but so eager to learn and grateful for all advice. I'd like to know what you think of their homestead and what they're doing if you get a chance to watch. I've really enjoyed watching their stops and starts.

I didn't know enough when I started my family either, so it's just as well I didn't try it.

Interesting videos by the couple, thanks Bobby. Old homesteads are fascinating. I always picture those people living there in those long ago days. Times were so much different back then. For some reason there is a sadness as I see what remains of their hard work and dreams.
Here's another good show shown on The Discovery Channel(some episodes) are on you tube as well. The guy singing the theme song is Jewel's father.

Sounds very interesting. I love to read books about Homesteading, living off the land, etc. and this sounds like I'll enjoy. We have a Roku and can watch youtube from our big screen TV. I think I've watched every episode of Waltons and Little House on the Prairie reruns. Much simpler life without all the pretense.

I hope you like it, they seem a really nice family and are working their butts off.

YW, Bobby. The new season hasn't started yet. A while back they were showing reruns on Discovery. Some of them I had missed, I had a chance to watch them. The scenery makes it worth watching as well as watching the extended family handle some of the hardships they endure in Alaska. They have lots of fun as well, it's a close knit family.
