It's Thoughts And Prayers Time Again....

A US Border Agent was killed protecting this country from illegal immigrants. Another one was injured.

First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go out to these agents' families and the entire Border Patrol community.

I suppose I should pray that liberals start supporting lawful immigration, but suspect any efforts in this regard would be futile.

How would any kind of immigration reform have prevented this incident? A border patrol agent, was killed, on the border. With the amount of illegal drugs being run over the border this type of an event is going to happen. This, more than likely, was a drug run or drug affiliated. The wall will not stop that, there's to much money in it to stop it. They'll just shoot the drugs over the border with a compressed air bazooka.

Get serious about securing the border.

Or dig tunnels under it. Or just buy a ladder. Or buy some wire cutters for the fence section. Republicans want to spend 25 billion dollars on something that will effectively be a minor nuisance.

Liberals do support lawful immigration.

Anyway, if you have an issue with illegal immigration, one of the simplest and most obvious things we can do to combat it is to greatly liberalize legal immigration. Coming here illegally is often very dangerous, and being here illegally has all sorts of issues as well. If people had a fairly easy route to get here legally, they'd take it. And as those legal immigrants filled up the niches in the job market currently filled by undocumented workers, there'd be less of a draw bringing people here illegally.

Unfortunately, even though that's a simple, obvious, and humane solution, it's one that doesn't appeal to xenophobes. And since xenophobia is a major driver for anti-illegal-immigrant sentiment, you won't see many people on the right embrace it.

Good catch. If only you'd start opposing illegal immigration. But I get it, you need the votes.

what is the purpose of sanctuary cities?

I'm against illegal immigration. The question is what to do about it. The right-wing answers to that question tend to range from the ineffectual and hyper-expensive (building their stupid-ass wall), to the pointlessly cruel (deporting people who have lived almost their whole lives here). I'd prefer practical solutions. First, start by giving those who are here a pathway to citizenship. Second, institute a crackdown on illegal employers -- make it so people who knowingly hire undocumented workers can lose their homes and businesses as a result. Dry up the illegal jobs Americans are luring undocumented immigrants with, and the flow will diminish to a trickle. You could even combine the two efforts: for example, the pathway to citizenship might include a shortcut for those undocumented residents who provide information or testimony leading to the conviction of an illegal employer. If potential illegal employers thought about undocumented workers as people just itching for a chance to turn them in, how many people are going to risk hiring people illegally just to save a few bucks?

I'd imagine different cities have different reasons for such policies. One big driver, though, is wanting to maintain trust between undocumented residents and the police. If undocumented residents are afraid to go to the police to report crimes, for fear of deportation, you wind up with neighborhoods that are impossible to police effectively. You also wind up with government resources being pissed away on small-time crooks whose only crime is not having the right paperwork for their job. In a time of tight government budgets, a lot of cities can think of things they'd rather be doing with tax money than carrying out unfunded mandates from Trump.

If you're an alien in this country illegally your path to citizenship starts when you return to your country of orgin and apply for legal immigration status. Period.

Pretty simple really.

That's unrealistic. Most won't do so, leaving us with the same issue we currently have. I have a suspicion this is seen as a feature, not a bug, from a certain conservative perspective. The status quo is a conservative dream: the undocumented workers are here to mow their lawns and clean their toilets, but can be treated the way employees used to be treated back before the progressives got their way a century ago, since they have no standing to insist on labor protections or even just workplace safety. It's like the Robber Baron age.

I'd prefer a solution that's realistic. So, that would mean a pathway to citizenship that a large portion of those here illegally will actually take.

Does “undocumented” mean about the same thing as an illegal alien?

If you ever tire of waiting for Arkpaidy's or Bugsy's answers on ANY given matter, just hop on to the Democratic Party's official website and you will find the same info in precise, exact verbiage...deviating not in a single syllable.

Just a shortcut if you're in a rush.
