One or two hours is impossible resident_ - true that Notre-Dame is on an island but the emergency services are expert at clearing areas and getting to fires anywhere in Paris very very fast ...... it makes no sense that it took that long. We must though wait for conformation of that because rumours always fly at such times.
It is never reported by our corrupt and wicked media but since 2016 the Christian religious communities of France have, on an almost daily basis, suffered terrorist attacks and desecrations from Islamists - that said I fear worse than Islamists here I fear Macron et al - Les Elite have been plagued by the Gilet Juanes for, what is it now, 23 consecutive weeks? Since November anyway - they will of course blame them and crack down even harder now using this heart breaking fire as the excuse to shoot French citizens. That is the way it is here now ................ I think that everyone has been expecting 'Macron' to pull some sort of awful stunt to halt the protests but this? The very heart and soul of France? We shall hear the truth of it from the Gilet Jaune .............. but it is very hard for me, at least, to believe that this was an accident or even an Islamic attack.

That repairs were going on anyway makes it not impossible that the fire was purposefully set to cause the least damage but we shall see ............. the damage to the soul is not so easily repaired

I don't have an emotional attachment to Notre Dame. I feel a loss of a wider common heritage but it is not closely personal as it would be for someone who may have regularly attended services. I feel empathy for those Christians with a strong emotional reaction to this event and not as much to those who are secular and affected emotionally. The real meaning is in the Christianity and belief and not the secular feelings. It is of a European soul no matter our beliefs - how can I explain? I will relate it to myself even tough I am neither French nor Catholic - Notre-Dame holds within it the collective spirituality of France - as the CofE holds, for me, the collective spirituality of England ( as our old Catholic Cathedrals do too) - even though I am not myself CofE either I do go to church sometimes - Our little village church was built in 1200 - the church in the next village up even earlier -

Did you know that French troops were the first of our allies to be on the ground in Afghanistan after 911? They participated in the liberation of Mazar e Sharif from the Taliban.France has never been a country that could defend itself properly.
