The problem is that THAT is the level at which a large part of the populace thinks. THESE are people that watch people all but screw on TV under the guise of "reality" TV. Where we watch people hook up, make out and then "choose" who we like the best. Where more people follow people like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton who are famous for sex tapes and not anything remotely like talent.
As a country - we are almost entirely about being in other peoples' business. No rules. No standards and expectations of behavior. The media -is really given the majority of the idiot electorate EXACTLY what they want.. Nothing of stubstance, its all clickbait, hyperbole, breathlessness and exaggeration...
When John Edwards was caught, months to years after he had fathered a love child - it was put out by the freaking National Enquirer and people made fun of it, mocked it and dismissed it as seedy and tawdry. Now every freaking national media group is discussing sexual activities and porn stars. Um.. that was SUPPOSED to be beneath the dignity - of any serious person.. now.... nope.. but that is the stupidity of the american public.

That would be a big departure from Obama, but I wouldn't say it's an honest characterization of Clinton and Sanders. Yes, Clinton showed open disdain for those who were racists, sexists, and homophobes ... but that's different from having that attitude toward anyone with a political difference of opinion.

I don't. I can't speak for her. But obviously racism and sexism were high-profile features of Trump's campaign, which began with racist characterization of Mexicans more crude than we've seen from a mainstream contender since Buchanan and more crude than we've seen from an actual major-party nominee since Eisenhower ... and made sexist innuendo about Clinton into the major selling point of his campaign.

No, she didn't. For example, everyone who supported Trump had a difference of opinion with her ... but she said that half of Trump supporters were racists, sexists, and homophobes. Obviously that's equivalent to saying that many tens of millions of people who disagreed with her were not racists, sexists, and homophobes.
