Purchases Boomerang Back to Retailers, Costing Them Dearly; Returns Are a ‘Dirty Business’

Approximately 30m unwanted goods worth a total of £500m will be returned during the holiday period this year, according to research by LCP Consulting, a logistics consultancy.

Across ecommerce, returns average 15-20 per cent, although fashion eretailers see much higher rates of up to 50 per cent.

CollectPlus, the parcel delivery operator, has estimated that 31 per cent of goods purchased online this Christmas will be returned.

What's the issue?

Is your concern the out of control materialism that is Christmas?

Is your concern the poor taste of those who purchase gifts that are then returned? Or is the lack of grace shown by those returning gifts a concern?

Is your concern for the poor retailers who purvey crap to the masses and then suffer the consequences from irate consumers?

What's the issue?

Record returns are inextricably linked with record sales. Record sales are inextricably linked with economic positivity. It sounds like the good Sergeant has finally given in to the "good news of Obamanomics"!

In the interest of editorial accuracy though, I'm not saying that we returned more because we bought TOO much. I'm saying that our tendency to return, is a relatively fixed percentage number. Therefore, if we buy (gross) more, we'll return (gross) more.

The total percentage of returns versus sales is higher, meaning there were more per capita returns for each sale. The quantity of sales is irrelevant.
