Detroit is paying the price for its factories all closing down. Detroit led the nation in hiring black people in her factories during those supposed racist years of 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. You have a bunch of statistics, but no real knowledge of Detroit. Coleman Young was, in fact, put in power by the black panther movement in Detroit. He was their clean as a whistle politician, but he put forth policies that were everything the black panthers were fighting for. Coleman Young rinsed the police force of all whites, completely changed the force to all black in less than a decade. Trust me, those new black officers were not even close to capable police, and the city paid the price, 1976 was a frickin' jungle. My clear instructions, at the tender age of 17, was to get off the John C Lodge at all costs, if I got a flat tire, my dad said to just run of the rim, he didn't care if I destroyed the car, but get off the Lodge. The state police would not even pull you over for speeding right next to them, because if they did, they knew someone would be killed while they wrote the ticket... I drove 20 mph over the limit in front of a state police cruiser, he pulled up next t me and gave me a look that said, "don't press me, kid" and I slowed down, and he took off, no speeding ticket.

I'm not sure what you are talking about with that statement about a far greater amount of blacks were killed in white suburbs than whites were killed in Detroit; there was no mix in the all white suburbs, to speak of, and we didn't kill niggers for sport if that's the picture you are trying to paint; for that you have to go to Pittsburgh. The black/white conflict was happening in the city, and the black panthers armed the gangs and they drove the white people out to the suburbs; white flight happened at gun point. And Coleman Young was all for it, baby. When Detroit was rioting in 1967, Coleman Young was on the "burn, baby, burn" side. Check out how many houses were torched under Young's administrations, there is no comparison in the history of the world, he out torched Nero, he was a radical black clergy that seized control of the city, had the full blacking of the black churches (the vote) and he reigned as king of that city, the only mayor to hold the same kind of power would be Daly here in chicago; but Daly was never the kind of racist that Coleman Young was. Coleman Young waged his own personal war with the white suburbs and fanned the flames of racism, eventually, the business community just ignored him and abandoned Detroit... I lived in detroit when Coleman Young was mayor, I cast my very first vote in America to vote against the idiot; so I voted for the Republican clergyman running against him that had no chance; but that younger black man had the right vision for Detroit; get rid of Coleman Young at all costs.

We hired black and white people and here's the reason blacks were under employed; they grew up on ADC with no fathers, no education, no work ethic, and couldn't perform a single hour of work, let alone a full day's work. They knew how to get drunk and run drugs and steal from stores, but turn a wrench, or type on a typewriter? That has changed, the city has changed, I truly believe it will make a slow come back, but back in the 1970's and 1980's, a lot of factories went under simply because of incompetent work forces. Incompetence on a level you couldn't fathom, they moved into beautiful houses but had no clue how to keep them up and turned neighborhoods like Highland Park, the city of trees, voted the most beautiful city in america in 1960, into a hell hole. I lived and worked in Detroit, we were not racist people, it was the politics of racism that destroyed Detroit, before the black panthers seized that city, it was the most multi-cultural city on earth. Detroit embraced cultural diversity more than any city in America. Dearborn and Dearborn Heights was a reaction to the black panthers, the panthers instilled the fear, and they reacted in fear to them. That's how it went down. I used to visit camp Dearborn as a kid, Miss Furnier would take my oldest brother and I with her two boys of our same ages, the families were very close; and very liberal minded, Alice Cooper was first cousin to the Furniers, in my mid 20's I did land surveying for a Dearborn Heights company. In my late 20's I drove a moving van in the city. I saw both sides, the people didn't hate each other, it was all politics.

You need to travel over the city border between the Gross Pointe "suburbs" and east Detroit. The streets all run together, there is no natural border, but never was a border more clear. On the Detroit side, every house was a crack house, stolen cars piled up in all the back yards,, every window broken, not all of them boarded, people hanging out in the street all day, every day, drunk as hell, attacking anything that moves to steal a dollar, killing for any amount of small change, hell on earth. The next street was completely clean, plate glass windows, the height of fashion, furs, gold, all on display... and not one resident from a detroit street would dare travel dare, because the police would pick them up immediately and beat them senseless if they did. Any other strategy would have resulted in the exact same hell hole in any place that didn't practice that. the black wave came west, and as it came, it cleaned up its act, but the shit that remained behind, in the streets where Eminem (M&M) grew up, try listening to some of his songs and you'll get the picture. There's no way to pretty up Detroit. Anyone who grew up there when I did, and saw the 67 riots, saw all those buildings on fire, lived in fear because the riot could move and would've moved if it weren't for the state militia; our homes all had rifles with ammo loaded in the chamber at the ready.

When you take a city by force, it doesn't do wonders for the economy. When the mayor screams racist slurs at the white suburbs for 20 years and alienates the entire business community, it really doesn't help the economy. Detroit is paying dearly for that, the riots tore up some ground, but the wrecked economy destroyed the entire municipal INFRASTRUCTURE. That's why Michigan went from the richest per capita state to the poorest per capita state. I grew up in Oakland County when it was the richest county on earth; the US Open was held every other year at our golf clubs, the largest and best architectural firms in the world hailed from Detroit, same for engineering, they were still pouring over at the River Rouge plant, the business sector was capable of almost anything. Detroit colleges and museums are gorgeous, it was a beautiful city and the homes were beautiful. My parents would take us for rides just to enjoy looking at the houses. The politics of force changed everything. There were inequities, to be sure, but instead of making things better for Detroit's black population, the politics made things far worse. Those people pine for the good old days when they were supposedly being cheated. And the huge black flight took place in the past two decades, especially in the last decade. The city emptied out when all the factories closed down; I remember something like 35 auto factories operating 30 years ago; people moved when they lost their jobs. Same thing happened in Pittsburgh when steel failed. When i moved to pittsburgh in 1992, I tried to look up "steel" in the Yellow pages, it wasn't in there, not even as a reference.

Dearborn was developed as a whites-only community in 1909. If a Black person tried to go there, "the police would pick them up immediately and beat them senseless." Grosse Pointe instituted a pogrom that drove all the Blacks out of town in 1934. These were not reactions to the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in 1966. They were precipitating influences for the deterioration of Detroit's industrial infrastructure and education system.

The Black Panthers were not trying to start a race war. In fact, there was a whole group of white people based in Detroit--the White Panther Party--who were allied with them.

I'd be interested in any evidence of your assertion that Coleman Young spent decades screaming racist slurs at the white suburbs.

If that is true, what in the hell happened to the US during the zero years?

With a black now in charge we are slowly coming back from the White Man's mess ,fighting the ignorant white men in Congress all the way.

You make a lot of sense, Days. Your first-hand experience of that city speaks for itself, and the essence of your argument about what brought Detroit to its current depressing state is sound. And whether Coleman Young was a Black Panther or not, it was not White people that turned Detroit into a freakin' waste land, as some are trying to assert. I have watched a bunch of cities across these United States deteriorate over the years, and in each case, the common denominator was Black kids taking over the inner city, gang banging, selling drugs, shooting up the streets, and spreading mayhem to the suburbs.

We can put only so much blame on White discrimination. Other ethnic groups (Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Italians, Irish, Jews, et al) faced similar discrimination when they arrived here, yet were able to rise above such challenges and make good. You won't find their communities in a shambles, or their kids running wild, in a semi-savage state. Nor will you find them constantly accusing the White man of racism every time a White man says something they do not agree with.

Detroit is merely the template for what America is becoming. Our criminal government enables this horrible downward spiral by its indiscriminate importation of dependent people from Third World countries and adding them to the over-loaded welfare rolls. [I knew this dangerous trend would accelerate under Obama, and told this to anyone who would listen back in 2008, but the rush was on to elect a silver-tongued Wall Street socialist puppet who would make everything in America honkey-dorey]

Unfortunately, White folks have become so intimidated by Black (and Hispanic) cries of racism that they no longer put up a resistance to the mindless invasion of their country, the destruction of their Constitution, the theft of their wealth and liberties, the creeping Orwellian tyranny, and the onslaught on their way of life. They have essentially become a useless people in their own country, content to go along with the crowd, just to get along, to accept being portrayed as boobs on TV, to back off when challenged by Blacks on any issue, and to live on cheap entertainment, joblessness, and/or minimum wage. It makes me sick to my stomach to watch this state of affairs unfold. No nation in peril can ever recover from such a condition.

The only problem with this thread is the fact many are laying it on the people living there.

Having spent many happy vacations with relatives there, and watching what happened. A thriving city was demolished by greedy people of all stripes.

Those same people passed laws that helped kill the city. The CEO's of big corporations demolished the manufacturing base.

The blacks all are referring to as, thieves and worse were all hard working people until the jobs were decimated. They came to Detroit from the South for a better way of life after WW2.

Bussing, passed by Congress decimated the city because those who could afford to move went to the Suburbs. The poor stayed behind. And when I say moved,I am referring. to all colors. The same thing happened in Dayton.

We managed to survive. I am really tired of the blame shoved on one race. It simply is not true.

Thank you! This whole thread is nothing, but a," Blame it on Blacks!"

I guess if that makes them feel superior, they must be awfully inferior!

there's plenty of blame to go around. Designed failure being probABLY THE GREATEST CULPRIT. That's what drove the market to foreign cars. You would think that Ford, GM, and Chrysler would have been able to chart a better course than they did, the same type greed punished steel in Pittsburgh. I grew up in a white suburb, I was raised to be very accepting of all cultures, and that includes the education I received in public schools, after the riots in '67, no one wanted to continue segregation, but no one wanted street crime invading their neighborhoods either. And Coleman Young was very much at odds with the white suburbs and very vocal about it, he was constantly calling them racists, and this resulted in tension between the races and violence in the streets. So, instead of working closer together with the white suburbs, Coleman Young drove the two factions further apart. And that had economic impact. You can point at segregation all over America before WWII, but the plain truth is, in Detroit, those same racist white suburbs were building auto plants in Detroit and hiring black people to work in them. The bosses lived in their white suburbs, but they gave work to the negro at a time when no one else in America was doing that. Notice, MLK Jr never needed to travel to Detroit. My hometown was part of the underground railroad in the Civil War era, there was a lot of angst over the busing issue, but it was because the kids were made to travel too far on those buses, not because of desegregation.

What drove Detroit into bankruptcy? Coleman Young.

All the other ailments aside, if we had had good leadership in place of Coleman Young, detroit would still be a thriving city with auto unions demanding too much and civil service retirement programs over bloated and all the other earmarks of a thriving middle class. 20 years of bull headed confrontation politics is a long time; it is a generation of decline that was too strong to turn around.

Chinese-, Japanese-, and Korean-Americans had a lot of support from China, Japan, and Korea, outside support that the Black community almost totally lacked. And there was never a time when 1 in 4 Chinese, Koreans, Italians, Irish, or Jewish adult males were incarcerated. You think that has anything to do with "fatherless Black kids committing crimes"? You think the war on drugs has anything to do with that? Because I seem to recall a lot of Chinese, Italian, Irish, and Jewish crime as a result of alcohol prohibition.

Like ÊTR! You poor thing. Them darkies is comin' to get you if the brownies don't do it first!

That is so short sighted. Detroit going down was caused by actions taken from the Congress on down. I watched it happen, blaming those who are starving, angry and taking out their rage, just makes you feel superior.

You do not want to solve problems, you just want to blame others.

Look how many make fun of Obama being a Community organizer. At least he was out there working to make things better for those less fortunate.

Even at my age I still try to help when I can.

Do you know how silly the Blacks on ADC sounds? Just like the poor whites who had little education, they came to the Northern cities to have a better life.

People with any common sense know the actions of Government giving tax breaks to go over seas, the greed of those in charge of the factories brought about the blight in the North.

Now you blame the victims of those actions! Get real. Furthermore I see little Christianity in your bigotry. And,a little note here, that anger and hate is what is decimating Religion. Not what Christ taught. You should retire that Cross Jesus died on!

And if this gets me a warning,so be it!

To me Detroit is a beautiful place of architecture and building styles. If i was a young man i would look into buying a piece of property there to renovate and live in.

Not to mention the failure to develop unions in the South. Because the Southern textile workers weren't organized, the auto companies could close their Northern plants, open up nonunion plants in the South, cut wages, and slash benefits, with no labor movement ready to take them on.

If these fools who blame the victims would look around, and listen they would know what you suggest is being done right now, there are pockets all over Detroit where those with means are refurbishing, restoring and making Detroit live able again.

Every city goes up and down in certain neighborhoods.

Right here we had a very blighted area. A wealthy Black Singer came in,built a Studio in that neighborhood. Now a group of wealthy builders, who have been here for years is rebuilding, refurbishing down town, building homes and apartments, pouring money into the river fronts. Dayton is on 5 rivers. We have a new Arts Center, the Dayton Art Institute is also being redone.

You are one of those who thinks ahead. That is what we need, instead of whiners about other races.

I just wish I were young again.

When the poor leave because of no service and no stores the value of the property is such that redevelopement of that area is viable for a reasonable price and a profit can be made.

Absolutely . Money is being made off flipping houses, are building all over, and I know that is happening in Detroit in certain areas.

No city remains the same forever.
