Well the issue has been that we were "pre peak Oil" for most of that time, and as a nation we SUCk at long range planning. WE are now "post Peak Oil" and the rules have changed. The reality is that absent a massive "war time economy" style effort, we cannot catch up anymore. And any effort to do so will simply go towards making the PRC's expansion cheaper.how much higher does the curve need to be to justify?
as far as diversification..how many years have we been on that path vs progress made?
Oil is a global commodity and thus you cannot do anything to contain the costs WITHIN the USA without inherently paying for other nations. That's why pretty much every other nation in the world is aggressively pursuing ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES...
