Legally, presence in the U.S. without authorization is not defined as a crime but as a civil offense (similar to a traffic ticket).
I call BS:

Is it a Crime to Enter The U.S. Illegally?

Illegal entry (or "improper entry") to the US carries criminal penalties (fines and jail or prison time), in addition to civil penalties and immigration consequences (deportation and bars from future entry).

by Ilona Bray, J.D.

Whether it’s by crossing the U.S. border with a "coyote" or buying a fake U.S. passport, a foreign national who enters the U.S. illegally can be both convicted of a crime and held responsible for a civil violation under the U.S. immigration laws. Illegal entry also carries consequences for anyone who might later attempt to apply for a green card or other immigration benefit.

The penalties and consequences get progressively more severe if a person enters illegally more than once, or enters illegally after an order of removal (deportation) or having been convicted of an aggravated felony.

To enter the U.S. illegally is a crime, but most "illegals" did not ... they entered the U.S. legally and later on their permission to be in the U.S expired.

So if your parents rob a bank, the kids get to keep the money?

No, this would be more like, if the bank makes a bookkeeping error in your favor, you don't go to prison when they take the money back. Deportation is like correcting the bookkeeping error. Not like punishment for a crime.

how was he protected?
he took up residence in a city/state that protected him from a 6th deportation. if he'd been deported, he wouldn't have been present to shoot kate.

although mr zagata would likely have returned illegally again, and shot someone else, and come up with another bullshit claim of innocence.

Ignoring the fact that a jury found the shooting to be accidental, is the premise for your argument that if he'd shot a Mexican instead it wouldn't have been as big a problem?

It's very simple. We're in much more danger from the police state being built by immigration law enforcement than from a Mexican whose only hope of a job was in the U.S. but who was refused a visa because the ruling class wanted illegal and not legal immigration (easier to control) and got caught with a joint.
"We're".....so you are an illegal

Not even Trump attempt to say there are 40 million illegal aliens...but would you call someone who was brought here as a child a criminal?

There is literally no path to citizenship for people brought illegally to the U.S. as children.

It doesn't matter our legal status, we are all in danger from Washington's police-state methods.

Steinle was only 32 when she was shot and killed in July 2015 by a bullet fired by illegal alien Jose Ines Garcia Garcia Zarate, who had a record of seven felony convictions and five previous deportations. Garcia Zarate did not deny shooting Steinle, but said it was an accident.

Why was he running around, free to kill, in America?
