    7. Pope: Stop Worshiping ‘God Called Money’
First he says the Catholic Church has an “obsession” with gays and abortion, and now Pope Francis is attacking the finance world—is there nobody he isn’t afraid of? After apparently throwing away his prepared remarks, the pontiff on Sunday slammed the global economic system, saying it is based on a “god called money” while also pushing the unemployed to look for work. Speaking in Cagliari, Sardina, Francis told a group of unemployed miners (many of whom were chanting “work, work, work”) that “we don’t want this globalized economic system which does us so much harm.” It sounds like he had been reading up on the fifth anniversary of the Lehman collapse.

So my question: part of the right wing nuttery consists of uber religious christians, many of which are catholic. how much influence can the pope have on toning down the divisive rhetoric we've been seeing the past few years, and will that play a part in reducing the influence of right wing christians on our politics?
    Anyone?

Political Christians shall remain political Christians, I suspect. While I don't look for any of them to change their opinions based upon anything that this Pope (or anyone else) says, I do expect their numbers to continue to dwindle as a percentage of the overall electorate.

Hey Judy, good to see ya. I like this Pope as well, but doubt he'll tone down the rhetoric any. In the US, a majority of Catholics vote Dem. If anything, i think he'll fire up the TeaFleas even more.

In case ya missed it ;-)

SCALIA FORMS SEARCH COMMITTEE FOR NEW POPE
    POSTED BY ANDY BOROWITZ

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Saying he was “sorry it had to come to this,” Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said today that he was forming an “independent search committee” to select a new Pope.

The visibly upset jurist appeared at a press conference with the sole other member of the newly formed search committee, Justice Clarence Thomas.

Justice Scalia said he had “no other alternative” but to pick a new Pope himself after reading what he called a “disturbing” interview with Pope Francis today: “The Pope said he doesn’t want to speak out against abortion and gay marriage. Well, sorry, my friend, but that’s the entire job description. You should have thought of that before you let them blow that white smoke in Rome.”

Justice Scalia acknowledged that only the College of Cardinals has the legal authority to choose a Pope, but added, “Quite frankly, those jokers got us into this mess. Right, Clarence?”

    Justice Thomas had no comment.

Nice sentiments. When I see mass arrests of pedophile priests, I'll be impressed.

...I actually think that under this Pope, there is a better chance of this happening than ever before.

Judy, I am not sure American Catholics are a significant part of the "right-wing nuttery". That said, I also do not think this Pope will have much effect, at least not in the short-term.

...I agree with you however, I am really starting to like Pope Francis - though I am still skeptical of the "Church" itself but we'll see...

We can certainly hope. This Pope certainly seems to understand the notion of creating broader appeal. He will continue to be interesting to observe.

...you know, I thought the same thing. He is really sticking it to the established religious "elite" and I bet they don't like that one bit....

Whenever a truly good person gains any sort of high position, more often than not, someone kills him. You want to measure the character and integrity of a leader? Count how many times they've tried to murder him (or her).....
