I need some suggestions...Should we put in a pool???

We just purchased a new home....it has a huge fenced in back yard which has lots of room for a pool. I'm pushing an above ground, my husband wants in ground. My argument is that an above ground is much easier to remove if we decide to later. We had an above ground years ago when our kids were growing up. Once they graduated and they and their friends no longer used it much, it needed to go! We now have grand kids that will use it...but I say above, one day they'll also be moved on! The back yard is gorgeous.....it looks like an oriental garden. So I say a pool would actually make it look tacky. Have you gotten the idea I really don't like pools?? Lol! I'd much rather spend the money on a house keeper. This place is WAY more than I really want to clean! Since I'll still be taking care of my granddaughter, I'd rather spend the time with her (she's just so adorable!!). So....any suggestions would be great! I'm retired, my husband is retiring in December, and I just want to live the EASY life! :)

NO. Emphatically and unequivocally... NO!

I have a pool because my wife HAD to have one. Now with the upkeep, the chemicals, the algae....it's a nightmare and let's not forget the electric bill for that pump going off twice a day.

If I could drain it and fill it in...I would!

I know what you mean! The first pool we had was when my husband won about $12,000 at a casino years ago. He was adamant about getting a pool...I knew what a pain they were because I grew up with one. He said he would take care of it.....it was good for about 3 yrs because our kids used it a lot. Then when they were gone it wasn't used so much and we had a hard time keeping it clean because it wasn't used enough! Funny how that was forgotten....he now things we need another for the grand kids! I'm not thrilled about it. I'd rather put in a hot tub....I'd use that!

Congratulations on your new place! It looks gorgeous in the pics! Wow...enjoy every moment...you deserve it!

Hmmm.....Pools are beautiful, but they're a lot of upkeep and expense.

Mine is in-ground. Thankfully, the pool guy takes care of it, but it's an added expense every month. I'm looking at different designs for the mosaic in the bottom, since it has to be resurfaced again in the near future.

As CB said, the electric for the pump, plus the heater during the cooler months, really crank up your electric bill.

A Koi pond with a waterfall would be beautiful, since you already have the Oriental garden.

Imvho, as nice as the pool would be, a housekeeper would be a better expenditure. That's a lot of home to keep up with, yourself.

This is your time to enjoy life.

Soooo excited for you!!!

And, you can use the hot tub all year-round!

I've thought about a pool through the years. But I just don't want the hassle. If I got one it would be in-ground............our association demands it, but in-ground is better on resale of the house than above ground would be. I just decided, though, that I don't want one at all.

Winterizing it would be such a huge hassle, too.

You have such a beautiful yard, Jen. ❤

Hey....the housekeeper suggestion is great!! I'd never been able to afford that before, so I hadn't thought of it! I could then spend more time just taking care of my granddaughter! I meant to tell you...my husband went out and got me a new car! I'm soooooo excited....it's a 2017 Cadillac ATS! It's amazing!! This isn't the exact same one, but just like it...

I always thought above ground was better on resale....because it could be removed easier if a buyer didn't want it. But I like in ground better.

We do have a nice yard. Thank you, @LeilaniMP.
You do!!! We have some landscaping that needs to be done, but have to wait until spring actually gets here! We have a GIANT tree in our back yard that is very cool, but it worry's my husband thinking it could come down on the house. Worry wart! Lol! It actually looks like it has a face! :) I love it!

I have a pool because it was in place when I bought the house. Everyone uses it a lot, in the summer, and usually, we put the cover on it in winter. This year we didn't and our Irish Wolfhound puppy, fell in it, somehow and drowned, (he avoided it like the plague because he was afraid of it) We don't know how it happened everyone was gone except for me and I was inside. When the kids came home, they found him floating in it, The water was so cold, he probably went into shock. It broke our hearts, the pool only brings bad memories for us now. Also, I just had to spend $4,000. to get all the equipment replaced.

beautiful house, Caroljo, congratulations! As far as the backyard goes... I could see a pond with a waterfall in it... next to that, a garden swing.... aaaahhh.... curling up with a good book with a glass of wine... my idea of heaven.

We had a pool when the kids w ere growing up, and it was used a lot in the summer. Now, I'm not so crazy about the idea of having a pool... I'd rather join a local club if I want to swim, and let THEM clean it... lol

PS I'm for the housekeeper -:)

Yes, you do, Jen! Beautiful house, too! I have to say, sometimes I miss mine, but the gypsy life suits me fine most days....

Avoiding the harsh NJ winters will be our aim from here on in. Still living in Georgia at the moment, planning on heading back up north in another month or so. Thinking of stopping at dawgs place again on the way up... a reunion is in order, you think you guys might make it? Leilani and Carol are working on it...

What a horrible experience! I've always thought above ground pools were safer, nobody can just FALL into it. And like you said...it can get pretty expensive to maintain.
