The assault on Carimella is very obviously intended to both damage his reputation by implying he is dishonest and should be treated as a spy and traitor as well as telling anyone else who might come forward with information that hurts Trump that they'd better be prepared for the retaliation that will occur.

The Bush administration strove to do exactly that when Joe Wilson came out with his Op-Ed about his trip to Niger in answer to Bush's claim that Iraq was trying to get yellowcake from them. They went after his wife, Valerie Plame. Seems to be a trend among republican administrations.
