That's how anarchy turns out as proven by history.

The French Revolution is a classic example of how anarchy turns into chaos until the strongest take over the weak.

George Washington: The purpose of government is to find the happy medium between tyranny on the one hand, and anarchy on the other.

I.e., neither tyranny nor anarchy are remotely desirable.

Anarchy is a natural state of chaos which comes before a natural state of order settles --- that is all that it is.

Anarchy should be avoided. The strong rule the weak without any kind of social compact.

    Even So, It's So Uneven

In a republic, the strong rule the weak even with a social compact. The strong write the rules and own the propaganda tools that make the compact seem balanced. The "rule of law" is the law of the rulers.

I think his point is that our choices are to live in a chaotic "every man for himself" world or in an ordered world where we give into the rich and powerful.

Those who see the world in black and white see it that way, but the reality, at least for the sane people, is the world is a panoply of grays with black and white being only the most extreme on the palette.

I think Democracy is only an illusion if you refuse to see it for what it is, two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.

I would much rather live in a Republic that recognizes the rule of law than I would in a Democracy, or under Anarchy. No system is perfect and you'll find abuses everywhere but to say that because one system isn't perfect it therefore isn't different from others is nihilism.

I also see the benefits of living under a benign dictatorship, we can see all sorts of systems which could work well, The Three Fold Commonwealth sounds a wonderful idea.

But we have got what we have got and that is all we have to work with --- all we can do is demand and or work toward reform of that which we have. In order to do that we needs see the cracks in the brickwork or we shall end up with a not so benign dictatorship ( if we do not already have one?) or anarchy, of sorts.

Seeing the cracks isn't enough. What kind of society will you have if enough people see the cracks but then write that off to nothing really mattering? I think you get a society in that case where some people are able to abuse others not because they have an advantage over them but because too many people won't do anything about it but those same people will blame the downfall on others, politicians, Wall Street, the illuminati, aliens, whatever. A social compact isn't a one way street.

I know seeing the cracks isn't enough - it helps if we do though otherwise it will get pretty draughty.

That's not anarchy. Anarchy means no one ruling anyone.

As Dickens put it, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."

The revolutionary struggle to produce a new order in which the weak and despised would rule themselves was "chaos" for the ruling class, and when that struggle ran out of steam the counterrevolutionary struggle to establish the uncontested rule of a minority class under the guise of restoring the old order created chaos for everyone else.

My point is Anarchy doesn't exist. It's not in our nature, someone is going to be in charge.

Someone being in charge is not the same as someone terrorizing everyone else into submission by means of police, courts, and prisons. The state is a relatively recent and increasingly obsolete innovation. And prior to the historically short-lived chiefdoms it replaced, the people “in charge” were just those who were most respected, who exerted a natural authority without compulsion.
