Anniversary bump. Just recently read Battle On The Bay by Edward T. Cotham,Jr. Really good book. Earlier in the year,I read Dr. Donald Frazier's trilogy of books on CW Texas and Louisiana. There is an entire chapter on the 2nd Battle Of Galveston in Fire In The Cane Field and a good bit of information on it in Thunder Across The Swamp.

The second Battle Of Galveston occurred on January 1,1863. The official commemoration ceremony is held on the first Saturday after New Year's Day. This year,as well as last year,it was held at Trinity Episcopal Cemetery aka Old Episcopal Cemetery at Broadway and 41st Streets in Galveston. The pic above is the Battle Of Galveston Monument placed in the cemetery by the UCV/UDC. The local UDC Chapter decorated it that morning. It is impossible to take a legible pic of the inscription on that old Texas pink granite.

A local SCV Camp and it's Color Guard participate in the main ceremony.

Lotta organizations participate in the ceremony but the principal organizer is SUVCW Edward Lea Camp No. 2 based in Houston. Lt. Commander Edward Lea was a Union officer on the USS Harriet Lane and was killed in action at the Battle Of Galveston. He was a Mason and was buried in the Old Episcopal Cemetery in Galveston with a traditional Masonic burial ritual. On Saturday, the Masonic Harmony Lodge No. 6 in Galveston conducted the Masonic burial ritual at the gravesite of Lt. Cmdr. Lea.
