My employer – which has operations in Britain as well as the USA – issued a memo last month. “Don’t express any opinions on Brexit” (The upcoming british vote on whether or not to remain the European Union). It’s totally their own decision.
Enter President Obama, who spent yesterday partying with 90 year old Empress Dowager Elizabeth the 2nd. After he was done bowing to foreign potentates, Obama dashed to the nearest microphone and told Brits that they should stay in the EU and enjoy the additional layers of taxation and micro-regulation.
Actually, I agree with the President. Remaining in the EU will result in a weaker, less competitive Britain. And thus more success for US corporations (like the one I work for) all things considered. But that’s neither here nor there. The question is “Should Obama just keep his big mouth shut?”
London’s socialist Mayor Boris Johnson thinks Obama is out of line. Boris made his point by referring to our President as “Half Kenyan”. Okay – I can see where that’s intended to be insulting. I think if someone here in the USA said that he’d be audited by the IRS faster than you can say “mudblood”.
Evidently Britain and Kenya have been feuding for like a hundred years. Something about Churchill, the privileges of empire, and possibly angst over Kenya having been repeatly oppressed by one corrupt government after another since gaining independence. I’ll leave it to the #KenyanDubloonsMatter activists to spell out the details about this troubled relationship, in their replies to this top post.
Back to the Brexit, and that "Kenyan coffee with cream" snark.
I’m going to take Obama’s side here. What I might say about Brexit publicly is a matter of clearly defined corporate policy. Just like Curt Schilling is probably not supposed to cross dress and poke fun at transgendered toilets while pulling down millions in salary from ESPN.
But Obama is under no such restriction. As our head of state, he’s entitled to have an opinion on international matters, whether those opinions are well informed or not.
As for Boris Johnson (named for the character in Rocky and Bullwinkle?), I have this to say:
The UK has been butting its runny limey nose into America’s affairs continually since your army got spanked by a bunch of colonials with squirrel guns in 1776. Get over it. You burned down our white house (war of 1812); captured our merchant vessels at sea; defaulted on bonds, and would have lost 2 world wars if he we hadn’t saved your sorry asses. You were so in our face telling us to vote for Obama in 2008, and then immediately making the case for the Obama Nobel Peace Prize. You brits shoot your mouth off 10 times a day about stuff that is none of your business, and which you are completely wrong about.
And that’s okay. You're within your right to make uninformed suggestions from sunup to sundown on what's left of the British empire.. But don’t be pusillanimous hypocrites and whine when you get a taste of your own rhetorical medicine.
The last time we heard from Britain, you were trying to pass legislation to prevent Trump from ever setting foot on your godforsaken little island. While at the same time welcoming Vladimir Putin and the president of Iran, which is ground zero for terrorism and human rights violations. Isn't that right?
