It was reported in the papers and I read it then (and I'm not hallucinating). There were jews dancing, too. There were "Palestinians" dancing on rooftops, as well. Video was being broadcast of it here until the Saudi government, a major shareholder in some Western media companies, squelched it. The jews who run so much of the media buried almost all the videos and photos of the dancing jews, I suppose, but there's some of it around. Anyway, Trump exaggerated but he wasn't making it all up. (Oh, and I don't support Trump at all, but facts matter)

First, yes, Trump made a false claim -- there were definitely not thousands. But what I read did say that there were celebrations among Arabs in and around New York City.
Second, thank you for prompting me to try to find links to articles like the one I read. Doing so, I found a lot of interesting information suggesting possible misreporting or mis-identification of the people celebrating in America. I may have been wrong entirely.
I'll look into it more but the truth may be too obscured. For now, we can agree that Trump wasn't telling it, regardless.
