Now they have done it!

Yes, it was the only real option they have. But now the question becomes, who's next? The EU is cracking up and will continue to do so. All the developed economies have been gorging on too much debt. We need the deflation and recession that the central banks have been putting off in a futile attempt to repeal the business cycle. It only makes the ultimate adjustments worse.

default would have been acceptable if they had a viable "plan B".

they have none.

they're sticking with plan A - refuse to pay anything back unless the europeans lend them more money first.

i don't see this ending well.
Agreed. The Greeks will now have to face the reality of their actions. Will the Euros cave or will they let Greece leave the EU?

I hope we are next --- referendum is in the offing but I fear we are a nation of wimps/cowards.

The EU was not budging an inch, nor was it going too --- what they were asking was impossible.

The average Greek family income is less than £500 per month.

Though this is the last resort not the first second or even third but the only resort left to them, it is democracy in action. Good for them. Sadly I don't think the British are that brave.

Thank you, I'll read it later with my cuppa. I really do hope that the Greeks have instigated a move toward some form of true democracy --- seems appropriate eh?
Yeah, we all need to move our politics more into the local realm. The "one world government" crowd are a bunch of authoritarians.

The Euro version of "democracy in action": Borrow a lot of money, spend it all on big paychecks then refuse to pay it back.

The majority of is was spent by their Gov on Military equipment, most of which they bought from Germany.

I just heard on AJ that Greece only implemented one of the articles of agreement they signed two years ago.

well, the canary that ate the bird seed, all the cake, got a loan and bought a new cage, ate some more, bought another cake, and so on. then said i'm hungry...bought more and more..

then told everyone to go pound
Agreed. Hopefully, the Euros will boot Greece out of the EZ and tell them to eat Drachmas. Let Greece set an example for all to see on the excesses of socialism and irresponsible government.

Greece has been given every chance to make good on their debts and they acting like welfare queens in blaming everyone but themselves for their predicament.
