The ideology of extreme conservatism taking over the Republican party.

Not just Liberals, but also sane Republicans, should think long and hard about supporting this scourge of the earth (teabaggers) because they will come after them if they don't adhere to their principals.

We know about right wing authoritarianism in the Middle East. If we didn't have our eyes closed, we know and saw it perpetuated for nearly a decade from our invasion of Iraq in 2003 until we left. We also saw it in previous wars we've fought.

As an example, there is a video of a U.S. soldier beating a sheep to death with a baseball bat and enjoying every minute of it while about 8 or 10 of his fellow soldiers in arms cheering him on. Or another instance when a U. S. soldier found pleasure in throwing a puppy he found in Iraq off a cliff. I use these examples not because the were the worse atrocities our soldiers carried out in Iraq- but to point out how easily the mind of anyone afflicted with Right Wing Authoritarianism act.

I'm not claiming that all of the right wing of today are that extreme. Most of U.S. soldiers proudly and with dignity serve our country. I'm just saying that there are those that are beginning to follow in the same footsteps of extreme conservatism in the world of those that they say they despise but proudly carry on the same acts of crimes against humanity. They may not carry out the same atrocities here, but you know the thought crosses their mind just by the way they talk about Liberals here on this very board.

So remember that when cons continue claiming our military is predominately right wing and vote accordingly---specifically the rising fluctuation and attempted influence in Congress by these extremists.

Back to the allusions in the top post....I think this might be an example of one of the unintended consequences of an all volunteer military. With a draft, we draw from a (rough) cross-section of American society. No doubt, that cross-section probably WOULD include a wannabe sheep beater. But...other members of the pool who weren't down with sheep beating, might discourage him in his desires.

On the flipside - with an all volunteer military, we are narrowing our soldier pool rather dramatically. Not only that, but we're "concentrating" whatever traits the pool may have - either good OR bad - rather significantly. Now I'm not here - because I'm not qualified to do so - to define or opine as to those traits. But..we're silly to the extent we ignore this reality.

A soldier who fought in WWII or even Vietnam, might have been "just like me". A soldier who fights more currently, probably wouldn't be. This is most important when we look to helping newer veterans cope. We mustn't pretend that they represent a random draw from among society.

I laid off this post for a while to get as much input from cons I could to show them that they are authoritarians. The two quotes above no doubt bolster what is said to be traits of those with right wing authoritarianism:

1. Authoritarian submission: submissiveness and acceptance of authorities which are perceived to be legitimate and established in society, such as government or the police.
2. Authoritarian aggression: aggression against outgroups and “deviants”–people who the established authority mark as targets. Examples of this includes travellers, immigrants, Muslims and other kinds of scapegoats.
3. Conventialism: high adherence to traditions and established social norms. This can manifest in a respect for “traditional family values”, for example.

Right-wingers have occasioned much recent comment. Their behavior in the Republican debates has caused even jaded observers to react like an Oxford don stumbling upon a tribe of headhunting cannibals. In those debates where the moderators did not enforce decorum, these right-wingers, the Republican base, behaved with a single lack of dignity. For a group that displays its supposed pro-life credentials like a neon sign, the biggest applause lines resulted from their hearing about executions or the prospect of someone dying without health insurance.

Now, I'm not saying Al was there cheering as those there did. But it's not out of the question to think he would given the tone of his posts here.

Here again we see the paradoxical nature of the authoritarian personality: rebelling against authority while hungering for it - exactly as the contemporary right wing fancies it is rebelling against big government while calling for intrusive social legislation and militarism. In the midst of dire economic circumstances, why do they expend inordinate energy brooding over contraception, abortion, abstinence education, gay marriage and so forth and attempt to transform their obsessions into law?
