The prospective route for the Keystone pipeline, which would connect Canadian tar sands fields to the Gulf coast, runs through the 922,759-acre (1,442 sq mi) Rosebud Sioux reservation in south-central South Dakota.

….. the creation of the pipeline would violate the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie, an agreement between the Sioux and the US government allocating parts of the Dakota territory to the Sioux. He also said he has not been consulted by the US government or TransCanada, the Canadian company behind the 1,700-mile pipeline.

Sen Markey put thru a bill in the Senate requiring that any oil transported on Keystone be used in the USA and not shipped abroad. it didn't pass.
I also heard that an oil company bigwig said the oil companies aren't interested in that Canadian sludge anymore because they have access to all the oil they'll ever need.
anyway, I hope the Sioux go to Court if necessary to stop the last leg of Keystone.

I hope you are right. Because we know what the Pig Oil & Gas Companies want they get. Tar sludge is so expensive to do anything with it! Republicans just want it because progressives oppose it!!!

The keystone pipeline lost in the Senate by one vote, which likely sealed Mary Landrieu's fate if it wasn't sealed already. Mitch McConnell has already indicated that he is going to resurrect the legislation once the new Senate is in place, and it not only is likely to pass, but could do so with a veto-proof majority. As someone once said, elections have consequences.

Obama's own State Department issued it's final report on the environmental impact of the proposed pipeline earlier this year, and this is what they concluded:

Earlier this year, the State Department released an environmental review that concluded the Keystone XL very likely wouldn't have a significant effect on greenhouse gas emissions because the oil will ultimately be produced, even if the pipeline is not built. But environmental groups object to that conclusion and want the oil left in the ground.

The oil isn't going to be left in the ground. This becomes a question of how it is transported - by pipeline or over the nation's highways by truck - not a green solution.

Will the pipeline employ millions and make the U.S. totally energy independent? Of course not. Will it provide some jobs and make us less dependent on foreign oil? Of course. Once again, Obama's own State Department provides some answers:

The State Department estimates the construction phase would create about 42,000 direct and indirect jobs and generate about $2 billion in earnings in the U.S. Opponents dispute some of those numbers. One thing is clear: Once construction is finished in about two years, the pipeline would create only about 50 new permanent jobs.

About 40% of the pipeline already exists - it seems unlikely to me that this is not going to happen.
