So, Bergdahl denies being a deserter. Should Obama have left him behind anyway?

Bergdahl says he left his base to find another base in which to lodge a complaint against his own base - contending that there was no military order at his own base, and the like. He also says he was then captured by the Taliban and held captive under brutal conditions for 5 years,

So, Pugs now claim (after the fact) that Obama traded prisoners to get back a "deserter." But whether he was a deserter is clearly disputed. That raises the question - should Obama have left him behind because he may have been a deserter, but he may not have been?

Tough question, no?

The details...

Washington (CNN) Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl told the military he left his unit in eastern Afghanistan in July 2009 intending to walk to the nearest U.S. military outpost to report wrongdoing, believing he could not trust his own commanders to deal with his concerns, according to sources familiar with the Army investigation. It is the clearest indication yet of the motive behind his decision to leave his post.

Bergdahl was planning to report what he believed to be problems with "order and discipline" in his unit, a senior Defense official tells CNN. A second official says Bergdahl had "concerns about leadership issues at his base."

This information is part of the report presented to General Mark Milley who this week decided to charge Bergdahl with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. This information outlines what could be a key part of Bergdahl's defense, which the army is already aware of.

Both officials declined to be identified because of the legal proceedings against Berghahl, but both have direct knowledge of the information outlined in the report. "This was a kid who had leadership concerns on his mind," the second official said. "He wasn't fed up, he wasn't planning to desert."

Mr. Buggs,

Easy question. Yes, they should have tried to get him back to stand trial for desertion here, but not at the price of 5 high level taliban terrorists.

You said above that we should have tried to get Bergdahl released.

But now you say you would not have traded even one prisoner we held for him.

What would your strategy have been? Asking nicely?

What acts of terror have any of those five been accused of?
One was the minister of the interior. Another was head of security...a third was a radio operator.

Bush released over 500 "terrorists" from Gitmo....he got nothing in return.

Taliban were supported by Reagan and Bush I and of course most of the cabinet members of Bush II. Just when did they morph from Friends to Terrorists??

Members of the military of the nation we invaded - Afghanistan. The modern day equivalent of POWs. POWs were swapped. Hardly unusual.

Shucks, shortly before 9/11 the GWB administration was trying to strengthen ties with the Taliban.
