In a free market - as opposed to a Soviet-style system - the consumer makes his own decision as to whether or not to buy the product and pay the tax. Some people - like Staples above, seem to prefer the Soviet-style system that takes the consumer out of the decision making process.

Every time anyone suggests raising any sort of tax, radical-right-socialists come out of the woodwork shouting what they seem to feel is the dirty little secret that increased taxes redound to the consumer. These radical-socialists down seem to understand that that's no secret and it's exactly how it's supposed to be!

Exactly. Who else can? Even in the flat tax world some support, transactions are taxed at each level of consumption. The consumer of resources pays a tax...then the consumer of the product made from those resources pays the tax. Some are sales, some are excise...I admit it is a complex structure, but too many merely attempt to demonize taxes, no matter their source or use.

I have this weird idea that wages take taxes into consideration....i.e...a 28% tax is levied on wages...then the pay reflects that as a cost of doing business....and is somewhere close to 28% more than the employee would receive if taxes didn't play a part.
By the way...you're absolutely right as to taxes, wages, and equilibrium. The righter kooks love to shout that poor people should pay more taxes. But, you'll not hear actual wealth and/or job creators spewing that silliness. They know damn well that any increase in taxes on labor, would only serve to increase their labor costs.
