Status of women in history

From what I've gathered, women's "status" historically has varied by factors such as birth, socioeconomic circumstances, character traits, and so forth, moreso than any specific "historical era". In times past, there was likely less upward mobility for women.

To me, it seems common sense - since queens and female nobility who were well-educated and had political power have existed since ancient times (e.x. the Biblical Queen Ester, Princess Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, and so forth). Other factors, such as intelligence and character traits, likely play a role as well, such as in the case of women like Marie Curie.
