God is a Spirit.Maybe God keeps allowing nature to crush civilizations in the hopes that one civilization will rise where the people don't hate each other enough to destroy the planet over that hatred. If that's true, then this one isn't it. We might not have reached as high as some previous civilizations, but we are just about as hateful as we can possibly be. Time to start again from scratch.
Humans were built in God's likeness, but God was not built in human likeness. That means we have a spirit too. It does not mean God has flesh also.
People are forever ascribing human likeness to God (and the gods). Jesus never did that.
Here's what I am getting (trying to get) at: God is credited for creating the physical universe... and whenever some natural clamity happens, we say God did it or God allowed it, but when they asked Jesus what was the sin of the people upon whom some tower fell... Jesus plainly answered, the tower did not fall on them for their sins.
God is a Spirit. All his blessings are in the spiritual realm. We try to bring God into the natural realm, we think of him as a "him" as a man, as a natural being... he's not, we are, and he created us, but he did not create himself and he is not a natural man.
When you read Genesis, try to remember, it is a myth, it is not at all an eyewitness, it is not prophecy, and it isn't really history either, no one in Moses camp had any better an idea what happened in Noah's day than we do, Moses' scribes wrote down the myth - borrowing from existing myths - and then added the history of their nation.
To wit: no one was there in the clouds witnessing God saying, "okay, no more floods, I promise, and here's my rainbow to seal the promise". That was probably a poetic way for the scribes to teach the people that the floods are not happening again. The scribes may have long lost the knowledge explaining why the floods will not repeat, but they had the myth, and there is no one living today, that knows for sure, if that rainbow bit was part of the myths they knew or if they added it; and what difference does it make? Rainbows still hold that promise, every time I see a rainbow, I think, God cares about me... something I need to be reminded of.
