Trump reached out........Dems not interested

Democrat hatred for America showed up last night. It was clear that Democrats hate everything that is the USA:
  • Parents of two girls killed by gang members honored
  • Our Military
  • Lower taxes
  • Fair and reciprocal trade
  • Low black unemployment
  • Fixing the infrastructure
Democrats want none of that.
Shameful.

There’s just nothing like being lectured about the virtues of military service by Donald “Five Deferments/Heel Spurs” Trump.

Classic.

So much for Trump's teleprompter speech... his actions has in the past and in the future will continue to speak much louder.

As you're aware, it's a lie to say "Democrats want none of that."

Democrats support fixing the infrastructure, for example. What they take issue with is the way Trump is proposing to do that -- not primarily by way of government spending on infrastructure repair, but instead largely by way of privatizing national infrastructure so that repairs are covered by regressive use fees instead of progressive income taxes (e.g., high tolls to use highways).

Democrats also have no issue with low black unemployment -- as you're probably aware, in fact, just about every time we have a Democratic president, the unemployment rate for blacks plummets (something we certainly can't say for most Republican presidents). It's just that people on the left have to chuckle when Trump pats himself on the back for the fact years of momentum of a plummeting black poverty rate didn't stop in Trump's first year.

As for fair and reciprocal trade: everyone supports that. The question is one of details. For example, is NAFTA somehow not fair or not reciprocal? If so, in what way? Is the WTO not fair or reciprocal? If so, what specific changes should be made. Trump has feasted on the credulity of right-wing dummies, by way of making perfectly vague assertions about some kind of unfairness in trade policy. But it's the details that matter.

Also, as for lower taxes, Democrats will gladly get on board with some kinds of tax cuts (e.g., they're traditionally the ones who push EITC). Republicans, by comparison, tend to push for tax changes that shift the burden downward -- e.g., tax changes that focus primarily on lowering taxes on corporations, income tax rates, and eliminating estate taxation.

Also, Democrats don't hate our military. In fact, many of them are veterans themselves (Max Cleland, Tammy Duckworth), etc. They just tend to be more skeptical about military overspend. Keep in mind that the US currently spends more than twice as much on its military as Russia and China COMBINED. Democrats have also, at least in recent decades, been more skeptical about half-baked uses of US military force such as the catastrophic invasion of Iraq.

Wouldn't it be better to engage with these issues honestly?

I'm not completely sold on the idea the President was actually 'reaching out' to the Democrats as much as he may have been shaming them publically last night. Those that watched saw how the Democrats reacted to what is generally considered great news for America, and that may not bode well for them.

Just my humble opinion, but I think Pelosi & Co. got played last night.

the gop should take a lesson from this, of course.

their political future depends on appealing to centrists and independents. the notion that they can hold onto congress or the white house by running the most conservative candidates available is probably just going to send independdents voting for democrats

Cons seem to think Trump wrote the SOTU himself. It's always obvious when he's reading from the teleprompter....I didn't hear any...BELIEVE ME's, LIKE YOU'VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE, I'm "LIKE" REALLY SMART, or GET THEM TO HELL OUT OF HERE..when the democrats boo'd his immigrant BS. Even his most avid supporters should be able to tell a Trump speech from a speech written by someone who isn't a deranged lunatic.

OH MY GOD!!! Did I miss something?? Was Democrat yelling out YOU LIE?? like one of yours did during Obama SOTU? And BTW, Jen, Every damn year those on the opposite side don't stand up and applaud everything the President...no matter who he is...says. You and Trump should get over the idea that he is a Dictator. In America, we can protest, disagree, and use our 1st amendment rights, whether your Dictator-Wanna Be Messiah likes or lumps it.

Regardless of what Democrats say they actually want, their actions last night proved otherwise to many Americans.

Actions speak louder than words and I believe Democrat action last night will come around to bite them in the butt in November.

Hopefully the GOP does take a lesson from it. GOP isn't behaving exactly stellar these days.

I doubt it. I think the far-right-wingers who are exercised about Democratic actions last night were already irredeemably committed to the cause of evil, so there's no loss there if they found yet another thing to which to attribute their hatreds. And judging by the polling of the SotU (the worst in the decades such polls have been conducted), it seems unlikely any meaningful number of people were swayed against the Dems.

It is not the "far-right winters" who are exercised [sic] about the Democratic actions. It will be the centrists and independents. The far right-wingers probably weren't any more impressed than the Democrat Socialists. But there is a growing group of centrists who will come to like Trump. So really, it depends upon whom you poll.
