Fort Mitchell National Cemetery,Fort Mitchell,AL:

https://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/ftmitchell.asp

I was in Phenix City,AL/Columbus,GA on 6/21/2018 on a Civil War sightseeing trip and had about an hour to kill in between planned site visits. Until I got to Phenix City,I hadn't realized that Fort Mitchell National Cemetery was so close. It was only about 10 minutes away,so I made a quick run over there.

Andersonville National Cemetery - 6/22/2018

In May and June I read a coupla books about Andersonville prison. Started planning a trip to southern Georgia last year. I'll probably post quite a few pics from this national cemetery. It is out in the Georgia sticks. I got there at 8am on a Friday morning and had the place to myself. I didn't plan it that way,but I started out in the oldest part of the cemetery.

Been awhile since I had any new material for this thread. I didn't get to visit national cemeteries in 2020 that I hadn't already been to and it wasn't until October and November last year that I got to do that. Only 1 planned so far this year and that will be in June.

I visited Sharpsburg(aka Antietam) last year for the first time in October and went to Antietam National Cemetery on October 9, 2021. It was late in the afternoon and very overcast. It was closed to new burials in 1953. Not sure why. Plenty of room there.

I visited Nashville National Cemetery on November 27, 2021. It was a cool, clear, windy day. The majority of the soldiers there are Civil War veterans and many of those are United States Colored Troops.

Have you seen the PBS documentary "Hallowed Grounds"? As soon as you've seen the cemeteries of the Civil War you have these to visit. We went to Naturno, near Anzio to visit the grave of a relative...

Fort Harrison National Cemetery. Didn't have any new material to contribute to this thread until recently. Made a 4 day trip to the Richmond, VA area in June. Fort Harrison National Cemetery was a little over 10 minutes from the airport hotel I stayed at the first and last night there. Visited and pictures taken on June 12,2022. Closed to future burials in 1967. Lotta "Unknown US Soldier" Civil War veterans there.

Winchester National Cemetery. Made a full 3 day trip to the Winchester, VA area in mid-October 2023. Winchester National Cemetery was the second stop on the first day, October 13,2023. 3 major battles were fought in Winchester during the Civil War and many others were fought in other locations less than an hour away. According to the historical marker there, around 4,400 veterans are buried there and about half are Unkown US Soldiers. There are 14 Civil War monuments there.
