Our technological expertise has definitely outpaced our social development, otherwise we would be better at preventing wars and strife than in killing people. As it is, we're very efficient at killing people and came close to wiping ourselves out during the Cold War.

Yes, we do adapt even to an office, but we still have problems. Ghettos, road rage and riots, IMO, are an indication of our artificial environment adversely affecting people rather than them being able to easily adapt to it.
Perhaps those are problems with our particular civilization and not with civilization as such?

My studies in both psychology and history show it's us. As for "civilization" in general, that's a matter of human definition.
