Yep, I've come across this guy's story on several other sites. The general take has been, “Ha! Let's all laugh at the skeezy moron!” Well, the guy is an idiot, there's no doubt about that. But frankly, the reporting has been light on the details of his offense. What did he do, exactly, to earn the better part of 7 years in the big house without the possibility of parole for a guilty plea on a first offense?
Could this guy be some basically-harmless dim bulb who carelessly violated the letter of the law, put his own head in the noose, and ran up against draconian sentencing guidelines? After all, he claimed that he was guilty of little more than poor judgment: he said that he didn't know at the time that his girlfriend was underage and he told the FBI that the pictures were part of a graduate school research project. And, as everyone should know, depending on one's state of residence it's entirely possible to have a partner who's perfectly legal to boink but not legal to photograph.
So, I did a little digging. I read through a couple of court documents – the appellate court decision and the defendant's original plea agreement. (I wouldn't necessarily trust the cops' or a prosecutor's public description of a defendant, the circumstances of the alleged crime, or the evidence in hand. Sworn testimony and court documents are another story.) Long story short, it looks as if this guy really did have some truly nasty stuff on his computer, and not just a couple of images either. Hard to believe it was all an oversight, a simple error in judgment, or the result of any legitimate research project... Really hard...
So it seems that the guy is in fact a skeezy moron after all. Carry on!
I imagine he thought it would be okay during a Democrat administrattion.

True, he was stupid enough to be a Republican. Plus, the whole pedophile thing was a hint at the great likelihood of his being GOP.
